For the most spoiler-conscious first playthrough, finish the main quest before starting story-focused DLC. If you want to play Band of Bastards before the finale, however, start it after Baptism of Fire and before entering Vranik during The Die Is Cast. Warhorse says its start becomes unavailable at Vranik until the Epilogue begins. Those priorities conflict: waiting is the cautious spoiler choice, while starting earlier avoids that documented pause in access.
Choose based on spoilers or access
| Your priority | Recommended timing | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Avoiding possible story-context spoilers | Finish the main quest, then play story-focused DLC | This is a cautious recommendation based on a community discussion, not an official spoiler warning or developer-mandated order. A player also reports that Band of Bastards dialogue can vary with Henry’s progress in the main story. Official forum discussion, November 29–December 3, 2020. |
| Playing Band of Bastards before the finale | Start after Baptism of Fire, before entering Vranik in The Die Is Cast | Warhorse’s forum post says the DLC cannot be started during the interval from entering Vranik until the Epilogue begins. Warhorse forum post, February 5, 2019. |
| Already entered Vranik | Wait until the Epilogue begins to start Band of Bastards | The post describes a temporary start restriction, not permanent loss of access. |
What Warhorse says about Band of Bastards timing
Warhorse’s forum post states: “The DLC can only be started after „Baptism of Fire“ quest.” It also says: “After completing this quest the only time when it will not be possible to start is after entering Vranik in „Die is Cast“ quest until the start of „Epilogue“ quest.” In practical terms, complete or begin the DLC before you enter Vranik if you want to avoid that start gap. If you have already crossed that point, the post says the restriction ends when the Epilogue starts.
The same timing rule should not be assumed for every expansion. The available official timing information here is specifically about Band of Bastards; it does not establish a universal sequence for all DLC or confirm every add-on’s post-ending availability across platforms and versions.

Steam’s surfaced listing text describes A Woman’s Lot as a Theresa-led standalone questline featuring her dog Tinker and says the base game is required. Make your decision before the Vranik mission
- If story context matters more to you than playing DLC before the ending, finish the main quest first. Treat this as a spoiler-conscious preference, not a guarantee that every expansion is spoiler-free at that point.
- If you specifically want Band of Bastards before the finale, wait until after Baptism of Fire, then start it before entering Vranik in The Die Is Cast.
- If you have already entered Vranik, do not assume you have permanently missed Band of Bastards; Warhorse’s post says it can be started again once the Epilogue begins.
- For other expansions, check the individual DLC’s requirements rather than applying the Band of Bastards restriction to the whole collection.
