Should I Turn Off Your PS5 When Not in Use?

Rest Mode can keep downloads, controller charging, and suspended games available, while a full shutdown stops those features. Choose based on what you need, and unplug only after the indicator turns off.

No—you do not need to fully turn off your PS5 every time you stop playing. Rest Mode is a low-power state that can keep a game or app suspended, charge controllers, and download or install content when the relevant features are enabled. Turn the console fully off when you do not need those functions or prefer it to be off.

Rest Mode or fully off: which should you choose?

Choose Rest Mode when… Choose Turn Off PS5 when…
You want to charge controllers, download or install content, or resume a suspended game or app. Some functions require settings to be enabled. Sony’s PS5 quick-start guidance describes Rest Mode as a lower-power state. You do not need those background features and would rather leave the console fully off. A fully off PS5 cannot charge controllers or download and install content. Sony’s quick-start guidance

There is no single best setting for everyone: the choice is between Rest Mode’s convenience and some standby power, or a full shutdown with no Rest Mode activity. Sony’s documentation does not establish that routinely turning the console off extends its lifespan or that ordinary use of Rest Mode damages it.

Is it okay to leave a PS5 in Rest Mode overnight?

Yes. Rest Mode is intended as a lower-power state for periods when the console is not being actively used. Leaving it in Rest Mode overnight is a practical option if you want background features such as charging or downloads. If you do not need them, use Turn Off PS5 instead.

Rest Mode power consumption varies with the functions you enable. Sony says the console does not automatically reduce consumption below 0.5 W when certain Rest Mode features are enabled; this is a conditional threshold, not a universal measurement of every PS5 in Rest Mode. Sony’s power-saving guidance explains the feature trade-offs.

How to enter Rest Mode or turn off your PS5

  1. To enter Rest Mode manually, open Control Center, select Power, then Enter Rest Mode.
  2. To shut down fully, open Control Center, select Power, then Turn Off PS5.
  3. After shutdown, wait for the power indicator to stop blinking and turn off before disconnecting the AC power cord.

Sony says factory settings put the PS5 into Rest Mode automatically after a period of inactivity, though the timing can be changed. The indicator is white when the console is on, orange in Rest Mode, and off when the console is fully off. Sony’s quick-start guidance

How to change automatic Rest Mode and background features

Set when the console enters Rest Mode

Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode. Choose separate timings for media playback and other modes, or select Don’t Put in Rest Mode if you want to prevent automatic entry. Leaving the console on instead of letting it enter Rest Mode uses more power. Sony’s power-saving guidance

Allow downloads and updates

If you want downloads or updates to continue in Rest Mode, enable the option to stay connected to the internet in Rest Mode, and check Sony’s automatic-update settings. Sony’s power-saving guidance notes that available Rest Mode functions depend on the settings you enable.

Consider Sony’s published default timings in context

Sony’s UK ecodesign page lists default automatic power-down periods of 240 minutes during media playback and 20 minutes in other modes. These are the defaults stated on that regional page—not a guarantee that every region, software version, or customized console uses the same timings. Sony UK ecodesign information

When is it safe to unplug a PS5?

Only disconnect the AC power cord after the power indicator is completely off. Do not unplug the console while the indicator is lit or blinking: Sony warns that doing so can cause data loss or corruption and may damage the console. Sony’s PS5 quick-start guidance
