For most 9-year-olds, it is better to wait. Battlefield 1942 is rated T for Teen by the ESRB, with Violence as its content descriptor; Electronic Arts says that category is generally suitable for ages 13 and up. A parent considering an exception should review the game first and decide whether its war-shooter content is right for their child.
What the rating does—and does not—tell you
The ESRB listing identifies Battlefield 1942 for Windows PC and Xbox and gives it a Teen rating with the descriptor Violence. It also lists “No Interactive Elements.” See the ESRB rating record.

EA explains that ESRB ratings include an age category, content descriptors, and interactive-element information. EA defines Teen as generally suitable for ages 13 and up, and notes that ratings can vary by country. That makes the rating a clear reason to pause for a 9-year-old, not an individualized assessment of your child or a universally binding legal age. If you live outside the United States or Canada, check the classification used where you live. EA’s player and parental tools.
#1 Best Overall
- Immerse yourself in intense WWII flight action as you make your way through the ranks of an elite fighter squadron.
- Go deep behind enemy lines as you battle for victory in the European and Asian theaters of war.
- Take command of Allied troops during the hellish battles of WWII as you struggle to wrest victory from the hands of the Fascists.
- Wage war online from dark jungles to villages on the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
- Master the weapons of warfare including pongee sticks and booby traps.
How to make the decision for your child
If you are considering letting your child play despite the age guidance, first review gameplay yourself. Focus on whether the combat and its presentation are acceptable for your child, rather than relying on the title or the rating label alone. The available ESRB record does not provide scene-by-scene detail.
- Check the age rating and content descriptors that apply in your country.
- Consider your child’s sensitivity to war-themed combat and how they respond to similar media.
- Decide separately whether you are comfortable with any online interactions. The ESRB’s “No Interactive Elements” label applies to the rated product, not necessarily third-party community services.
What to know about access and online play
Copies and compatibility
EA forum staff said EA no longer sells Battlefield 1942; that historical statement does not establish current retailer stock. EA hosts a PC manual, but neither it nor the ESRB listing confirms that a particular old copy will install or run reliably on a current computer. If you are considering a used copy, check its edition and completeness and verify compatibility with the device before buying.

Community-server workarounds may exist, but their current operation and safety are not established here. Treat any third-party online service and its interactions as a separate decision from the ESRB rating. U.S. Copyright Office filing.
