SILENT HILL f is a standalone 2025 entry that gives the horror series a new setting and a more melee-focused direction. Its 1960s Japanese town, unsettling atmosphere and story-linked exploration are its strongest draws; combat is the main caveat identified by reviewers. It is a plausible starting point for newcomers, as well as a distinct detour for longtime fans.
What kind of Silent Hill game is it?
Released September 25, 2025, SILENT HILL f takes place in fictional Ebisugaoka, Japan, in the 1960s. The story follows high school student Shimizu Hinako as fog descends on her hometown and familiar surroundings transform. It is not a direct continuation of the earlier stories set in the American town of Silent Hill.
Konami describes the game as psychological horror built around mysteries, frightening creatures and decisions that affect Hinako’s fate. Series producer Motoi Okamoto said the development mission was: “Find the beauty in terror.” That phrase captures the contrast the game is aiming for: beauty and cultural specificity set against disturbing transformation.
What the Japanese setting and creative team add
This is the first Silent Hill entry set in Japan. Its Ebisugaoka setting gives the series a different social and visual context, while Hinako’s situation brings social expectations into the story’s psychological horror. Okamoto said puzzles are tied to psychological anguish and Japanese cultural elements; that is the design intent, rather than a guarantee that every puzzle will land equally well for every player.

The creative credits reinforce the shift. Konami credits Ryukishi07 with the story and kera with creature and character designs. Akira Yamaoka composed music for the Fog World, while Kensuke Inage composed for the Otherworld. Rather than simply relocating the series’ familiar American-town premise, SILENT HILL f uses a new place, cast and creative combination to make its identity distinct.
How combat works—and what reviewers say about it
Compared with the SILENT HILL 2 remake, SILENT HILL f puts more emphasis on melee combat and action, according to Okamoto. A PlayStation Blog report on a pre-release demo said firearms were not an option for Hinako and described an iron pipe, sickle, dagger and naginata. Those are weapons reported in that demo, not a complete inventory for the released game.
The shift gives encounters a more direct action-horror role than a design centered on firearms. Whether that is a strength depends on what a player wants from Silent Hill: the closer focus on melee supports the game’s distinct approach, but combat is also where the sampled reviews raised reservations.

PC Gamer’s review praised the combination of exploration, puzzles, story and horror, and noted that players on Story Mode can avoid some enemies rather than fight everything. GamesRadar+ praised the writing, atmosphere and way puzzles carry narrative, while finding that uneven combat encounters can interrupt the experience. These are the judgments of those outlets, not a measurement of universal opinion.
What reviews praise—and where they hesitate
The strongest case for the game is the way atmosphere, writing and exploration work together. In GamesRadar+’s view, narrative is integrated into puzzles rather than kept apart from them; PC Gamer likewise highlighted the mix of exploration, puzzles, story and horror. That combination makes the game’s setting more than a backdrop: moving through it and solving its puzzles are part of how the story is delivered.
The main reservation is combat’s consistency and fit. GamesRadar+ found some encounters uneven enough to disrupt the experience. For someone drawn primarily to the series’ psychological unease and environmental exploration, that may be a frustrating change of pace; a player who welcomes more direct melee action may find the emphasis more appealing. The available review sample supports that trade-off, not a claim that every critic or player agrees.

Is SILENT HILL f a good starting point?
Konami presents the game as a standalone spinoff suitable for newcomers, with Easter eggs for longtime fans. That makes it accessible without requiring familiarity with earlier entries. Returning players may recognize series connections, but the Japanese setting, Hinako’s story and its own mysteries provide the central context.
It is most likely to appeal to players looking for atmospheric psychological horror, story-led exploration and puzzles, and who are open to a stronger melee component. If combat is the make-or-break element for you, the uneven encounters noted by GamesRadar+ are worth bearing in mind.

Konami reported that the game had sold more than one million copies globally within two days of release. That is the publisher’s milestone, not an exact sales total.
Should you play it?
SILENT HILL f is a meaningful new direction for the series: its first Japanese setting, story-centered puzzles and distinctive creative team give it a clear identity, while its melee-forward combat makes it feel different from the SILENT HILL 2 remake. The sampled reviews’ strongest praise is for atmosphere, writing and exploration; their clearest caution is combat that can feel uneven. If the setting and psychological horror appeal more than perfectly consistent action, it is a strong standalone entry to consider.
