Sine Mora EX is a side-scrolling shoot-’em-up for players who want more than a string of enemy waves: its time-based combat, elaborate science-fiction story, and striking mechanical designs give it a distinct identity. Story Mode is intended as the more approachable route in, while Arcade Mode leans harder on precision and scoring. Whether it suits you depends largely on how much you want narrative and replayable challenge alongside the shooting.
What kind of shoot-’em-up is Sine Mora EX?
Sine Mora EX is a horizontal shooter in which time is a central resource, not just a backdrop. The Steam listing describes scaling difficulty and devices that manipulate time; Nintendo’s listing presents Story Mode as narrative-led and Arcade Mode as a challenge for genre fans. Nintendo’s 2017 description also advertises seven stages and more than 50 weapon combinations. Those are publisher-listed features, not a guarantee that every combination or system will suit every player.

The EX edition expands the original presentation and play options. Steam lists 16:9 presentation, improved rendering, full English voice-over with the original Hungarian audio available as an option, local co-op for up to two players in Story Mode, challenge levels, and three versus modes: Race, Tanks, and Dodgeball. Nintendo’s interview with localization designer and English script writer Brandon Sheffield also discusses the co-op and versus modes.
Is Sine Mora EX good for beginners?
Story Mode is the more forgiving starting point, but that does not mean the whole game is a casual shooter. Sheffield described the design goal as making a more accessible shooting game without making a casual one. In Story Mode, taking a hit does not always mean immediate failure: the player loses power-ups and has to chase them down. Sheffield contrasted that with Arcade Mode, where greater precision is needed. The distinction gives newcomers a way to learn the game while leaving room for a tougher, score-focused challenge.

- Engrossing story integrated seamlessly into the action to elevate the user experience
- Unique, time extension based gameplay
- 7 beautifully crafted, diverse stages
- Over 50 different weapon combinations with time manipulating Devices
- Risk and reward - multiple difficulty levels in arcade mode with deep scoring and hidden rank system for the more experienced players
Players who already enjoy shoot-’em-ups may find Arcade Mode the more compelling test. Those new to the genre, or more interested in a campaign than score optimization, have Story Mode as an alternative. The available descriptions establish the intended contrast, not that either mode will feel easy or difficult to every player.
How prominent is the story?
The story is unusually central for a shooter. Sheffield summarized it as the story of a people who can move forward and backward through time, hunted toward extinction and exploited as an energy source, with survivors forming a resistance. The premise is ambitious and bound up with the game’s time theme, but the narrative’s invented terms and assumptions can make its opening hard to follow. Sheffield noted that it may make more sense on a second playthrough. If you mainly want uninterrupted shooting and clear exposition, that density may be a drawback; if you enjoy piecing together a strange science-fiction setting, it is part of the appeal.

- A chilling journey into the dark mind: Explore the Hanwell Mental Institute and uncover its dark past.
- Experience a mind-bending original storyline as recurring hallucinations blur the line between memory and reality.
- Investigate a detailed, decrepit asylum through point-and-click adventure gameplay.
- Solve evocative challenges that reward wit and observation.
- Enter an engrossing atmosphere with a memorable soundtrack inspired by 1980s horror films and John Carpenter.
The literary ambition reaches into the presentation as well. Sheffield wrote the English script from Hungarian, working with a rough translation and the original script. He also said the Attract Mode includes Endre Ady’s poem “In The Sieve Of Time,” which he translated for the game. The soundtrack is credited to Akira Yamaoka, and Nintendo credits Mahiro Maeda with the boss designs.
What stands out about the visuals and sound?
The game’s machine designs and backgrounds are a major part of its identity. Sheffield said the team wanted players to spend time looking at its mechs and unusual scenery, including “statues crying waterfalls.” That emphasis suggests a shooter that wants to be visually absorbed as well as played for survival and score. The named credits for Yamaoka’s soundtrack and Maeda’s boss designs add useful context, though they do not by themselves establish how the presentation will land for every player.

Does Sine Mora EX have local co-op?
Yes. The EX listing describes local co-op for up to two players in Story Mode. Nintendo specifies local multiplayer for one to two players on a single system and notes that multiplayer may require one compatible controller per player. The three listed versus options—Race, Tanks, and Dodgeball—are separate from Story Mode co-op.
How was Sine Mora EX received?
Steam displayed a “Mixed” user rating, with 65% positive from 464 Steam purchaser reviews in the 2026 retrieval snapshot. That is a time-sensitive Steam-only user-rating snapshot, not a critic aggregate or a verdict covering the Switch and Xbox versions. User sentiment can change as reviews are added, so the current Steam listing is the place to check for an updated figure.
