Choose skills that fit your class and preferred combat style, then experiment: you can refund individual skill-tree nodes or the whole tree without spending a resource, and change equipped abilities outside combat.
How skills work in The Veilguard
Rook’s skill tree combines active abilities with upgrades and passive bonuses. Skill points let you open paths through the tree and shape your character around a chosen class and combat approach.
- Large circles: class skills and weapon proficiencies.
- Diamonds: abilities that can be equipped in an ability slot.
- Medium circles: major passives or ability upgrades.
- Small hexagons: traits that modify class skills.
- Small circles: minor passives or stat boosts.
These categories matter when planning a route: an ability is an active option, while a passive or trait enhances a character or an existing skill. See EA’s progression guide for the publisher’s explanation of the tree.
What skills should you get?
Start with the class whose weapons and combat rhythm appeal to you, then prioritize skills that support that style. EA’s class descriptions establish broad playstyle themes, not a damage ranking or a single optimal route.

For any class, compare options by weapon style, combat distance, and whether a node grants an active ability or a modifier. Faction-themed specializations add another direction to explore, but do not provide evidence that one build outperforms another. EA’s class overview describes the class themes.
Skill points and leveling
Rook gains one Skill Point per level, and EA’s progression guide gives the game’s maximum level as 50. Quests are described as the largest experience boosts; combat and exploration also grant experience. Companions level separately and gain two Skill Points per level. These figures come from EA/BioWare’s 2024 progression guidance.

Can you respec skills in The Veilguard?
Yes. EA says you can refund an individual node or the entire skill tree without paying a resource cost. You can also swap Rook’s and companions’ equipped abilities outside combat. That makes it practical to test a new route as your equipment, party needs, or preferences change. In EA’s October 31, 2024 launch article, the Dragon Age team wrote: “You can also respec individual nodes or the entire skill tree to try out entirely new builds.”
What are the specializations?
Each class has three specialization areas. They are themed around factions, but Rook’s own faction does not lock the character to a matching specialization. EA’s example is a Grey Warden Rogue choosing Veil Ranger. Treat a specialization as a class-based option rather than a faction reward.

Official ability-set examples
EA’s launch overview presents the following sets as staff favorites for inspiration. They are examples, not a ranking of the strongest builds:

EA does not publish comparative performance data for these sets, so use them as starting points rather than proof of a universally best setup. The ability lists come from the publisher’s launch overview.
