The “time-traveling Columbo” description points to Omensight, Spearhead Games’ action murder mystery: its warrior protagonist relives the world’s final day while investigating the killing of a priestess. The comparison is a handy shorthand for the game’s detective premise, not an official connection to Columbo. The game reflects the Montreal studio’s aim to take risks and experiment after its founders left AAA development.
Why Spearhead’s founders left AAA development
Simon Darveau and Malik Boukhira brought experience from large studios to Spearhead Games, which they founded in Montreal. Darveau said both had worked at Ubisoft on major franchises, and he had led the naval sequences in Assassin’s Creed III. Boukhira had also worked at EA. A founding-period GamesRadar feature reported that Darveau left Ubisoft and started the studio with Boukhira, then design director for Dead Space 3.

The founders described independence as a chance to take risks, try new approaches, and work with fewer limits. “The game industry is shifting into a totally new direction, so what we felt is that we’re ready, and young, and we felt like we mainly wanted to “spearhead” and be part of the future,” Darveau told Destructoid in January 2014. Boukhira likewise emphasized the flexibility to experiment.
Tiny Brains put the new studio to work
Spearhead’s first release was Tiny Brains, a cooperative action puzzler about four super-powered laboratory animals trying to escape a scientist’s experiments. The founders pitched the game to developers in Montreal, and contemporary reporting said the studio went from nonexistent to shipping it in roughly a year. It released on PC, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4.

That fast start involved more than building the game itself. In the same Destructoid interview, Darveau said creating a new intellectual property and assembling a team within a year were difficult. He estimated online play took around 30% of production; that is his recollection, not an independently audited breakdown. The studio also began a weekly community stream to talk with players and share development, an early sign that independent work involved ongoing communication as well as making and shipping a game.

Omensight: Definitive Edition is an action murder mystery developed and published by Spearhead Games. Steam lists its release date as May 15, 2018. You play as the Harbinger, a warrior who witnesses the destruction of Urralia and can relive its final day. The central case is the murder of the Godless-Priestess: by meeting people connected to the catastrophe and learning what happened, the Harbinger tries to alter events and prevent the apocalypse.
That structure explains the Columbo comparison: the player returns to a day in which a killing must be understood, using new information from character encounters to change what happens next. But the comparison should go no further. The game’s official descriptions and the contemporary reporting cited here establish a murder investigation and a repeated-day mechanic; they do not establish that Omensight is based on, licensed from, or officially connected to the television detective.
Investigation, choices, and combat
The game combines narrative investigation with sword fighting and magic. Spearhead describes light and heavy attacks, combos, and dodging as parts of combat. The core loop is not simply repeating scenes: encounters give the player information and opportunities to influence how events unfold. The developer calls Omensight a spiritual successor to Stories: The Path of Destinies, set in a broad shared universe but differing in several ways; it is not described as a direct sequel.
For players choosing a narrative action game, the useful questions are how much they enjoy revisiting events to learn from different character encounters, how much those decisions change the sequence of events, and whether they want investigation balanced with action combat. Those are the defining axes of Omensight’s design, rather than a promise that every repeated encounter produces a wholly different outcome.
What the game’s credits and Steam listing establish
Spearhead’s developer page names Patricia Summersett and Julian Casey among the voice actors, and identifies Nadim Boukhira, Genese Davis, and Chris Avellone as members of the writing team. It also identifies Unreal Engine 4 as the game’s engine. Steam lists Omensight as single-player, with full controller support, and says a controller is recommended.
At the time Steam’s listing was accessed on October 8, 2026, it showed 88% positive from 1,173 purchaser reviews. That is an all-time snapshot, and both the rating and review count can change.
