Civilization VII is the newest mainline entry, but the best place to start is not automatically the newest one. Ranked by strategic cohesion, accessibility, distinctive ideas, expansion support, and how well each game plays today, Civilization VI takes the top spot, with Civilization IV close behind. This list ranks the seven numbered games first, then places major spin-offs and standalone related releases in context rather than treating every adaptation as an equivalent mainline sequel.

How this Civilization ranking works

There is no official best-to-worst order. This is an editorial ranking of the seven numbered mainline games, judging how well each one brings its strategic systems together, how clearly it communicates choices, what it adds to the series, how much official expansions deepen it, and how appealing it remains to play now. Expansion-complete versions can change a game’s standing, so Civilization VI’s base release and its Anthology content are distinguished below.

“Every game” can also mean standalone expansions, remakes, mobile and console adaptations, and spin-offs. Those releases are not silently mixed into the numbered ranking: a short section after it covers major alternate takes. Metacritic’s series ranking, for example, excludes the 1991 original because it lacks enough reviews for that ranking method. That is a coverage limitation, not a reason to omit the original from a considered list.

The seven mainline Civilization games, ranked

7. Civilization I (1991)

The game that established the series remains an important piece of strategy-game history, but its age is most visible in the experience of playing it. The basic loop of settling, developing, researching, and competing for a world-spanning victory is already here; the interface and systems, however, are far less legible and layered than those of later entries. For a present-day newcomer, its historical importance is stronger than its practical appeal as a first Civilization.

#1 Best Overall
Sid Meier's Civilization V: The Complete Edition - PC
  • ENDLESS REPLAYABILITY: Play as one of 43 historical leaders and wage war by land, sea, and air, conduct diplomacy & espionage, establish religious beliefs, and discover new technologies in your quest to build the most powerful empire the world has ever known.
  • HUGE BATTLES: Wars between empires spread across land and sea. Ranged bombardment challenges you to develop clever strategies to guarantee victory on the battlefield.
  • DIPLOMACY: Negotiate with some of history’s most cunning rulers, each with a well-crafted plan for victory. City-states present a diplomatic battleground on which the major powers of the world will vie for supremacy.
  • RELIGION: Cultivate Great Prophets and create a religion you can customize and enhance.
  • ESPIONAGE: Send your spies into foreign cities for surveillance, to steal advanced technologies from your competitors, or to interfere with city-state alliances.

6. Civilization III (2001)

Civilization III expands the familiar empire-building formula without the radical changes that make some later games especially distinctive. Its broad historical sweep and long-term planning still have appeal, but it is less immediately readable than newer entries and does not have as strong a modern case as the best-supported versions of IV and VI. Historical reception was strong: Guinness World Records, citing Metacritic, lists it at 90%; that is a historical figure from a page whose publication year is not stated, not a current score or a directly standardized comparison with every other entry.

5. Civilization II (1996)

Civilization II refined the original into a more approachable and recognizable version of the series. Its isometric perspective became a familiar visual language for later games, according to the official Civilization series history. That distinction matters: this is where the series began to look more like the Civilization many players picture. Its age still imposes a substantial interface and usability gap for modern players. Guinness World Records, citing Metacritic, lists it at 94%; the figure is historical, the source’s page publication year is not stated, and it should not be read as a current or directly comparable rating for the whole franchise.

4. Civilization V (2010)

Civilization V made a bold change to the map and the way armies occupy it, giving each land tile room for one military unit. The result makes positioning and fronts easier to understand than in the crowded stacks of earlier games, while also making conflict more deliberate. That clarity is a real strength for players who want to read the board at a glance. The trade-off is that its approach to empire management and conflict will not suit everyone, and the accumulated content in VI offers a broader, more varied sandbox. V remains a strong choice for someone who values a cleaner, more tactical map over the later game’s denser systems.

3. Civilization VII (2025)

Civilization VII is the latest mainline installment. 2K announced its worldwide launch for February 11, 2025, on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac, and Linux. Its position here reflects a ranking of the series as a whole, not a claim that the newest game is automatically the most complete choice. Players deciding between it and an expansion-rich older entry should weigh the appeal of the latest design against the depth already available in VI Anthology; the evidence here does not establish a universal winner for every player.

  • Offers new, streamlined form of gameplay
  • Multiple paths of victory offer unique strategy opportunity
  • Expansive game engages both new and experienced players

2K reported more than 73 million Civilization copies sold-in worldwide when announcing VII’s availability in February 2025. That is the publisher’s reported sell-in figure, not an audited player count or a current sales total.

2. Civilization IV (2005)

Civilization IV is one of the series’ strongest designs because its systems make an empire feel like a connected project rather than a checklist of upgrades. The official series history notes that it was the first entry to feature religions that can spread across the map and Great People with class-specific abilities. Those additions give cultural and religious influence a more tangible place in the contest between civilizations. It ranks just below VI because its older presentation and interface can make it a less comfortable recommendation for a new player, even though the strategic foundation remains compelling. Guinness World Records, citing Metacritic, lists it at 94%; that is a historical metric, with no page publication year stated, rather than a present-day ranking verdict.

1. Civilization VI (2016)

Civilization VI earns the top spot for balancing a readable core with enough interacting choices to reward long campaigns. Its map and empire-building encourage players to think spatially about development, while diplomacy, research, and competition for victory keep expansion from feeling like the only goal. It offers a strong entry point for players willing to learn its systems, and its accumulated official content makes it the most complete single recommendation in this ranking.

The version matters. The base game is not the same package as Civilization VI Anthology. 2K describes Anthology as including the base game, Rise and Fall, Gathering Storm, six New Frontier Pass DLC packs, six Leader Pass DLC packs, and additional leader and scenario DLC packs. Package details can vary by platform or change, so check the exact edition listing before buying. Metacritic’s Civilization VI page lists 84 critic reviews and includes reviewers who call it a high point for the series; those are attributed opinions, not a universal consensus or a ranking method.

Which Civilization should you play first?

  • For the most complete all-around entry: choose Civilization VI, checking whether you want the base game or the additional content in Anthology.
  • For the newest mainline release: choose Civilization VII, available on the platforms in 2K’s February 2025 launch announcement.
  • For a historically influential, focused alternative: consider Civilization IV, especially if older interfaces do not put you off.
  • For a more legible military map: Civilization V is worth considering for its one-unit-per-tile approach.

If you have never played the series, start with the game whose map, interface, and amount of accumulated content appeal to you. Civilization campaigns are long; a clear interface and a satisfying turn-to-turn rhythm matter more than a historical score or the order in this list.

Where the spin-offs and related releases fit

These games are not numbered mainline entries, so they do not displace the seven above. They are useful alternatives when you want a shorter or more unusual take on the Civilization formula.

Civilization: Beyond Earth

Beyond Earth takes the empire-building premise into a science-fiction setting. It is a distinct alternate direction for players who want to explore a future-facing setting rather than another historical campaign. Its premise makes it the clearest major spin-off, not a replacement for a mainline game in this ranking.

Civilization Revolution and Revolution 2

Civilization Revolution reshapes the series for a more streamlined, console-friendly format; Revolution 2 continues that alternate approach. Their quicker, more compact design makes them appropriate for players seeking a lighter experience, but they do not aim to reproduce the scale and complexity of the numbered PC-focused strategy games.

Standalone expansions, remakes, and platform adaptations

Standalone expansions and platform-specific adaptations are versions or extensions of a particular game, not separate numbered entries. Counting each as an equal item would mix fundamentally different things: a sequel, a content expansion, and a port. For the same reason, a mobile or console adaptation belongs with the game it adapts unless it is a separately designed spin-off.
