His fate in Lost Izalith depends on the player’s actions, while his signature “Praise the Sun” gesture is available in Dark Souls: Remastered on Nintendo Switch with or without the Solaire amiibo.
Who is Solaire of Astora?
Solaire is a knight and an adherent of the Lord of Sunlight. When he introduces himself, he says, “I am Solaire of Astora, an adherent of the Lord of Sunlight.” His unusual warmth and willingness to cooperate stand out in Lordran, where danger and distrust are common. He explains that he is searching for “my very own sun.” The Dark Souls Wiki’s character account and the Dark Souls Wikidot reference identify him with the Warriors of Sunlight.
What does “Praise the Sun” mean?
“Praise the Sun” is Solaire’s best-known phrase and the name commonly associated with his gesture: he raises both arms into a V. A scholarly chapter on Dark Souls describes the pose and characterizes the refrain as widely recognized in the game’s world and community. It works as an expression of Solaire’s devotion to sunlight, as well as a memorable gesture players can use to celebrate or greet one another.
How does Solaire help in the game?
Solaire’s cooperative outlook is reflected in his gameplay role. The Wikidot reference lists him as a summon for certain boss encounters and says he awards a Sunlight Medal if he survives the fight. His availability is encounter-specific, so his presence should not be assumed for every boss. These detailed mechanics are documented by a community-maintained game reference rather than an official strategy guide.

Can you save Solaire?
Spoilers for Solaire’s quest in Lost Izalith: Solaire’s fate is conditional, not the same in every playthrough. The Dark Souls Wiki describes a route in which he encounters a Sunlight Maggot in Lost Izalith, as well as a route where the player’s actions prevent that outcome. His tragic fate is therefore not inevitable; what happens depends on how the player approaches that part of the quest. The wiki’s Solaire entry details the branching outcome.
Do you need the Solaire amiibo to use “Praise the Sun”?
No. Nintendo says the Solaire of Astora amiibo can let players perform the gesture at any time in Dark Souls: Remastered on Nintendo Switch, but also states that “Praise the Sun” can be unlocked through regular play. The amiibo is an optional shortcut for that function, not a requirement to obtain the gesture. Nintendo released the amiibo on October 19, 2018. See Nintendo’s Solaire amiibo page and its amiibo compatibility information for the stated use and platform.
