SEGA ended standalone Steam sales of the original Sonic Generations on September 9, 2024, but said it would remain available in the Sonic the Hedgehog Legacy Bundle. Steam’s current listing still includes it in that bundle. If you already own the original, you can still download and play it.
Can you still buy the original Sonic Generations on Steam?
Yes, through a bundle rather than as a standalone purchase. SEGA announced on August 9, 2024, that standalone Steam sales would end on September 9, 2024, and that the original would remain in the Sonic the Hedgehog Legacy Bundle. Steam’s current bundle listing still includes Sonic Generations Collection.

That means a new buyer looking specifically for the original Steam release should check the Legacy Bundle page for their region. The Steam page also lists the game in the larger Sonic the Hedgehog: Ultimate Bundle, so compare the current bundle contents and price before purchasing.
What is in the Legacy Bundle, and how much does it cost?
Bundle contents can change and may differ by region. SEGA’s August 2024 FAQ listed eight planned items and an announced price of $59.99 USD, while warning that regional contents and pricing could vary. The Steam listing reviewed for this article showed six items instead:

The FAQ’s original eight-item list also included Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic Spinball, and named Sonic Adventure 2 Battle separately. Those are not shown as separate items in the current six-item listing. The $59.99 figure is SEGA’s announced 2024 price, not a confirmed current price. Check the live Steam page in your currency for the actual offer available to you.
Can existing owners still play and mod the original?
Yes. SEGA’s delisting FAQ says people who already purchased the original can continue to download and play it after standalone sales end. It also says they can continue modding the game and that pre-existing mods will still work. The sales cutoff affects new standalone purchases; it is not an announced shutdown of the game for existing owners.

- Play as both Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic in the ultimate Sonic experience. Master the moves of each character as they race through each environment on their own designed built track.
- Iconic environments from gaming history come to life in beautiful HD for the ultimate Sonic adventure, each revisited, recreated and re-imagined with stunning results.
Is SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS the same Steam game?
No. SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS, released October 25, 2024, is a separate product. SEGA describes it as a complete remaster of Sonic Generations, with updated visuals and bonus content, combined with a new Shadow Generations campaign. It is a newer option if you want the remastered game, but it is not the original Steam release or a replacement SKU for it.
SEGA lists PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, and Epic Games Store as platforms. The release notice specifies that Xbox and PC versions are digital only; physical editions are for selected consoles.

Physical editions and platform limits
SEGA’s product page describes a physical Collector’s Edition for PS5 and Nintendo Switch, with the physical game, a Shadow figure, a Sonic-and-Shadow-shoe keychain, and an artbook. The page names store markets in Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand; availability elsewhere is not established by that listing. Check local retailers for current stock. A physical console edition gives you the remaster, not the original Steam build.
