Sons of the Forest is a released survival-horror game for players who want to explore, build, and fend off threats on a dangerous island, either alone or in online co-op. Its appeal depends on whether you enjoy survival systems and construction alongside horror encounters; its 1.0 release also added story material and a creative mode that unlocks after completing the story.
What is Sons of the Forest?
After a plane crash, you must survive on an island by exploring, staying fed and hydrated, building shelters and larger structures, setting traps, and defending yourself against cannibals. Kelvin, an AI-controlled companion, is part of the experience. The combination of resource management, exploration, construction, and danger makes the game a clearer fit for survival-horror fans than for players looking for a combat-only action game. Steam’s listing identifies the game as released on February 22, 2024, and lists both single-player and online co-op.
Is Sons of the Forest worth buying?
The available review evidence points to a strong option for people who want survival and horror together, but it does not establish a single universal verdict. Steam’s English-language user-review snapshot is “Very Positive”: 88% of 118,042 reviews were positive when the listing was captured. Those counts and the rating can change. Metacritic’s critic-review page lists an IGN review dated March 4, 2024, scored 90. That review praises the story, survival, and sense of constant danger; it is one critic’s assessment, not a summary of all critics.
It is a good fit if you want
- Survival tasks such as finding food and water, alongside exploration and combat.
- Building that can grow from basic shelter to larger structures, with traps to help defend your position.
- A horror experience in which danger is part of the ongoing survival loop.
- A choice between playing alone and joining online co-op.
Think twice if you want
- A game focused mainly on linear action rather than survival, exploration, and building.
- Open-ended creative construction from the start: the reported creative mode unlocks after finishing the story.
Solo or online co-op: which should you choose?
Steam lists both single-player and online co-op. Solo is the straightforward choice if you want to manage the island’s survival and horror experience on your own. Co-op is the alternative if you prefer to take on the same broad mix of exploration, building, and danger with other players. The cited sources establish that both modes are available, but do not provide enough detail to compare their difficulty, pacing, or balance.

What did the 1.0 release add?
The game left early access with its 1.0 release on February 22, 2024. PC Gamer’s coverage of that launch reported additions and changes spanning the story, survival systems, world, and building. This is a launch-era account, not a complete inventory of every patch released since.
- More story: A choice-based ending and additional cutscenes.
- More survival pressure: A sickness system tied to bad water or spoiled food.
- More places and threats: New mutants, additional paths, and cave or cellar locations.
- More building and play options: Additional wildlife and building options, plus creative mode with a broad inventory and instant structure placement. Creative mode unlocks after completing the story.
- Other changes: New proximity voice-chat filters and further story and environment changes.
These additions give players interested in finishing the story more to pursue, while the post-completion creative mode offers a different reason to continue building afterward. The launch report does not establish that every issue from early access was fixed.
Rank #2
- Strategic Trick-Taking Gameplay: Master unique character abilities and special powers that let you change the trump suit, lead after losing tricks, and outwit your opponent with clever card play
- Compact Travel-Friendly Design: Perfectly portable for date nights, vacations, and weekend getaways with its small box that fits easily in bags and luggage without sacrificing quality components
- Beautiful Illustrated Cards: Stunning fairy tale character artwork with intricate botanical details and elegant brushwork makes analyzing your options quick and enjoyable during each game
- Quick 30-Minute Sessions: Ideal for busy adults seeking meaningful screen-free connection without long rulebook learning curves or extended play commitments on weeknights
- Balanced 2-Player Experience: Expertly designed trick-taking mechanics ensure neither player gains unfair advantage, rewarding strategic thinking and creating intense memorable moments every game
Verdict
Sons of the Forest is worth considering if you want survival, exploration, construction, and horror encounters in one game and value having both solo and online co-op options. Its 1.0 additions make the story and survival systems more substantial, while creative building is gated behind story completion. The review evidence is encouraging, but the changing Steam snapshot and one cited IGN score should be read as distinct signals rather than a fixed or unanimous verdict.
