What did the Sony report actually say?
On June 18, 2025, Insider Gaming reported that Sony was reportedly interested in Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) assets, citing a report from SEScoops. The reported package extended beyond games to streaming and studio assets, including HBO Max and intellectual property. The report said Sony’s interest depended on separating those businesses from WBD’s cable networks.
Insider Gaming said it had contacted Sony and WBD for comment. Its article did not include a confirming company response. It supports describing Sony’s interest as reported, not as a confirmed bid, formal offer or negotiated deal.
Was Sony interested in the games division alone?
The report described possible interest in a broader collection of streaming, studio and gaming assets—not a standalone purchase of Warner Bros. Games. It did not give an offer price, formal terms or evidence that negotiations took place. The available reporting also cannot establish whether Sony privately considered a bid or held discussions that were not made public.

What happened after the report?
WBD began a strategic alternatives review
On October 21, 2025, WBD announced a review of strategic alternatives after receiving unsolicited interest from multiple parties. Options included continuing its planned separation, selling the whole company, or pursuing separate transactions involving Warner Bros. and/or Discovery Global. WBD did not name Sony in its announcement or confirm a sale of Warner Bros. Games.
Paramount completed its acquisition of WBD
On October 6, 2026, Paramount announced that it had completed its acquisition of WBD after receiving required regulatory approvals. The Associated Press independently reported the close. The completed acquisition—not the earlier Sony rumor—is the relevant outcome for the company’s ownership today.

Who owns Warner Bros. Games now?
Warner Bros. Games is part of Warner Bros. Discovery, whose acquisition by Paramount was completed on October 6, 2026. Paramount’s announcement was issued under Skydance’s name and described the combined company as a new global entertainment leader. The close establishes the later ownership outcome; it does not confirm or disprove any private Sony discussions that may have occurred earlier.

No Sony offer amount or formal terms are established in the cited reporting. The financial figures reported for the later transaction refer to Paramount’s takeover of WBD, not to any Sony proposal: the Associated Press described the takeover as $81 billion and said the total including debt was nearly $111 billion. Neither figure should be attributed to Sony.
