“Sonic the Hedgehog” covers many PC games, and the right fix depends on which one is crashing and where you bought it. Identify the exact title and launcher first, then check that game’s current store-page requirements against your PC. Work through the checks below one at a time, relaunching the game after each change so you can tell what helped.
1. Identify the Sonic game and check its requirements
Find the full game title and the store or launcher you use—such as Steam or Epic Games Store. Compare your PC’s specifications with the current minimum requirements on that title’s store page. SEGA Support recommends checking the requirements for the game on your preferred platform: SEGA Support.
Requirements vary substantially between releases. For example, Steam’s listing for Sonic the Hedgehog (2010), accessed in 2026, specifies 50 MB of free disk space minimum, Windows XP or higher, and DirectX 9.0 or higher. Steam’s listing for Sonic Frontiers, also accessed in 2026, specifies 8 GB RAM minimum and 12 GB recommended, along with Windows 10, DirectX 11, and particular CPU and GPU examples. Those figures apply only to the respective listings; they are not general requirements for Sonic games. Store requirements can change, so check the current page for your exact title.
If your PC is below the game’s minimum requirements, software troubleshooting may not be enough. Establish the exact shortfall before considering an upgrade; there is no single component that can be recommended without the game and PC specifications.

2. Verify or repair the game files
A missing or corrupted game file can prevent startup or cause instability. SEGA Support recommends checking the installed files through the game’s launcher. The labels can change, but look in the game’s library entry for an option to verify or repair files.
- Steam: Open your Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
- Epic Games Launcher: Open your Library, select the three-dot menu beside the game, then choose Manage and Verify.
Let the check finish, then launch the game again. If you use a different store or a standalone copy, check that client’s support instructions rather than applying Steam or Epic steps.
3. Install Windows and graphics-driver updates
SEGA’s general PC guidance recommends checking for Windows updates and newer graphics drivers. Install available Windows updates through Settings > Windows Update. For graphics drivers, use the official update channel from your GPU manufacturer—NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel—rather than an unfamiliar driver utility. Restart Windows after installing updates and retest the game.

4. Make sure the game uses the intended GPU and power setting
If your PC has both integrated graphics and a dedicated GPU, the game may be using the less capable processor. Check Windows’ graphics preference for the game, or the GPU manufacturer’s control panel, and select the intended high-performance GPU if available. On a laptop, also check that its power profile is not limiting performance. SEGA’s support index links separate guidance for NVIDIA and AMD systems.
This is a diagnostic check, not a guaranteed fix: the cause could lie elsewhere, and menu names vary across Windows and driver versions.
5. Check security software and background conflicts
Antivirus or firewall software can sometimes block a game or its launcher. If you suspect a block, review the security app’s notifications or allow-list and consider an exception only for the trusted game or launcher files. Do not turn off protection wholesale, and do not allow files you cannot verify.

Other applications running in the background can also conflict. Close one suspected application at a time, then reproduce the crash. If closing it changes the result, check that application’s settings or support information before deciding whether it should remain closed while you play.
6. Temporarily remove mods and custom files
Disable mods and custom game files, then test an unmodified launch. If the game uses Workshop content, unsubscribing may not remove files already present in the game folder; check the game’s instructions for removing them. Keep a copy of anything you may want to restore, and change only the files you can identify.

If the crash stops, re-enable mods individually to find a possible conflict. If it continues, leave the game unmodified while you try the next checks.

7. Reset graphics settings or configuration carefully
This step is most relevant when a crash happens during loading or play alongside freezes, stuttering, or poor performance; lower settings are not a universal crash cure. SEGA suggests trying reduced detail or shadow settings, a lower resolution, or windowed mode. If you can reach the game’s settings menu, change one option at a time and retest.
If the game crashes before you can change settings, its configuration may be stored in a file or folder named something like config, graphics, or preferences, sometimes under AppData. The location differs by title, so do not delete a guessed folder or use a path intended for another Sonic game. If you find the correct configuration, move or rename it as a backup before allowing the game to create a fresh one.
Low available system memory or insufficient video memory for the selected settings can contribute to stutters or out-of-memory crashes. On a laptop, heat, battery power limits, and background programs can also affect performance or trigger shutdowns. These are possibilities to investigate, not proof of what caused a particular crash.

8. Try administrator mode, then reinstall only as a last resort
Test permissions before reinstalling
SEGA Support notes that permission issues can stop a game from starting or running correctly. If other checks have not helped, test running the launcher or game executable as an administrator. In File Explorer, right-click the relevant executable, choose Properties > Compatibility, select Run this program as an administrator, and apply the change. Only do this for software you trust; if it makes no difference, undo the setting.
Protect saves before reinstalling
If the crash persists, a clean reinstall may help, but deleting game data can also remove saves. Before uninstalling or removing files, find the save location for your exact game and back up the saves. If you are testing whether corrupted configuration data is involved, moving the game’s AppData folder to a temporary backup location is safer than deleting it. Reinstall from your usual storefront, then test before restoring mods or custom files.
When to contact support
If the crash remains, provide the game’s exact title, launcher or storefront, crash stage (before launch, while loading, or during play), any error message, Windows version, and PC specifications. That information helps support distinguish a game-specific issue from a system or configuration problem. SEGA’s troubleshooting articles offer general PC guidance; they do not establish the cause of an individual crash.
