Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) and Tencent resolved Sony’s lawsuit over Light of Motiram in a confidential settlement. A federal docket lists a stipulated dismissal filed on December 17, 2025; contemporaneous coverage described it as with prejudice. The case ended without a public ruling on whether Sony’s allegations were correct.
What happened in the lawsuit?
SIE filed Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC v. Tencent Holdings Ltd. et al., No. 3:25-cv-06275, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on July 25, 2025. Sony sought to stop the planned release of Tencent’s Light of Motiram, alleging that it copied protected elements of the Horizon games. Those claims appeared in Sony’s complaint; they were not findings by a court. Read the complaint.
On December 17, 2025, SIE filed a stipulation for dismissal under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 41(a)(1)(A)(ii), according to the docket index. See the docket index. On December 18, Game Developer reported that the parties had reached a confidential settlement and quoted Tencent Americas communications head Sean Durkin: “SIE and Tencent are pleased to have reached a confidential resolution and will have no further public comment on this matter.” Read Game Developer’s report.
What did Sony accuse Tencent of?
Sony characterized Light of Motiram as a “slavish clone” and alleged similarities involving protected audiovisual elements of the Horizon franchise and branding related to its protagonist. That phrase and the underlying claims are Sony’s descriptions in its pleading, not a court’s conclusion. The case’s resolution did not publicly settle the legal question of whether the game infringed copyright or trademark rights.

Does the settlement mean Sony won?
Not on the public record. A settlement ends a dispute by agreement; it is different from a merits judgment after a court decides the parties’ legal claims. The available public material establishes a stipulated dismissal and a confidential resolution, but does not disclose financial terms, admissions, licensing arrangements, or detailed future obligations. It identifies no merits ruling in favor of either company.

At the time of its December 18, 2025 settlement coverage, PC Gamer reported that Light of Motiram had been removed from Steam and the Epic Games Store. Read PC Gamer’s report. That time-specific storefront update does not establish that the game was permanently canceled or that it was unavailable through every channel. The public settlement reporting does not provide a definitive account of the game’s long-term release plans.
