Yes. Sony owns Bungie through Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), which completed its purchase of all Bungie shares on July 15, 2022. Bungie is still described as having creative and publishing independence, but that does not mean it is independently owned.
Who owns Bungie?
Sony Interactive Entertainment, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Group, owns 100% of Bungie. Bungie’s privacy policy, updated June 22, 2026, describes the studio as a wholly owned SIE subsidiary and part of PlayStation Studio.

When did Sony buy Bungie, and for how much?
SIE completed the acquisition on July 15, 2022. Sony’s completion announcement put the total consideration at approximately US$3.7 billion, including the purchase price and committed employee incentives.
Sony’s subsequent quarterly securities filing reported final consideration of ¥510.860 billion (US$3.704 billion): ¥348.169 billion (US$2.525 billion) in purchase consideration and ¥162.691 billion (US$1.179 billion), mainly for deferred employee payments and retention incentives. The roughly US$3.6 billion figure in SIE’s January 31, 2022 agreement announcement was the initial estimate, before customary working-capital and other adjustments.

Does Sony ownership make Bungie a PlayStation-exclusive studio?
Ownership alone does not establish that Bungie games are PlayStation-exclusive. Bungie said in its January 31, 2022 announcement that it would continue publishing its games independently and creatively developing them. Sony’s 2023 corporate report also described Bungie as maintaining independence and multi-platform operations after the acquisition. Those statements describe the arrangements at those points in time; they should not be treated as a guarantee about every future release.

How has Bungie’s relationship with Sony changed?
The original arrangement emphasized Bungie’s creative independence. In July 2024, Bungie announced deeper integration with SIE, including plans to move 155 roles into SIE over the following quarters and transfer an incubation project to a new studio within PlayStation Studios. This organizational integration is compatible with Sony owning Bungie; it does not mean Bungie was separately owned before or after those changes.
Leadership has also changed. In an August 21, 2025 announcement, Pete Parsons said he was passing leadership, and Bungie named Justin Truman its new Studio Head.

What does Sony ownership mean for Destiny 2?
Ownership does not by itself determine a game’s release schedule or whether it will remain playable. In a May 21, 2026 post, Bungie said it planned to release Destiny 2’s final live-service content update on June 9, 2026, and intended to keep the game playable. That is Bungie’s stated plan for Destiny 2, separate from the corporate ownership question.
