After player backlash, Sony reversed the plan on May 6. The reversal stopped the proposed account-linking requirement; it did not automatically restore Steam sales in every territory where PSN was unavailable.
What changed in Sony’s Helldivers 2 account-linking update?
On May 2, 2024, Sony Interactive Entertainment said Steam account linking had been temporarily optional because of technical issues at launch. Sony then announced a schedule to make linking mandatory: new Steam players would need to link from May 6, while current players would begin seeing login prompts on May 30 and were asked to link by June 4.

On May 6, Sony updated its Steam announcement and cancelled that plan. Sony wrote: “The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.” It added, “We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable.” Read Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Steam announcement.
The May 6 decision was a reversal of the proposed account-linking rule, not a statement that all regional Steam access or availability questions had been settled.

Why did Sony say it wanted PSN account linking?
Sony said linking was important for player safety and security. Its stated examples included moderating griefing and abuse and giving banned players a way to appeal. That was Sony’s explanation for the planned rule, not independent evidence that account linking would achieve those outcomes.
What was the original deadline for existing Steam players?
The dates below describe the cancelled 2024 plan, not a current deadline:
- May 6, 2024: New Steam players were scheduled to start linking a PSN account.
- May 30, 2024: Current Steam players were scheduled to begin seeing mandatory login prompts.
- June 4, 2024: Existing players were given this date as the deadline to link.
Sony’s official FAQ for the proposed rule said players could create a PSN account in a browser or when prompted in game. It also said progress on PS5 and Steam remained separate. Did the reversal restore Helldivers 2 Steam sales everywhere?
No. The account-linking plan and regional storefront availability were separate issues. A May 9, 2024, PC Gamer report said the game remained delisted from Steam in 177 countries and territories not served by PSN after Sony reversed the linking requirement. That figure describes the situation reported at that time; it is not a current availability count.

In that report, Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt said he was speaking with PlayStation and Valve and pushing to undo the restrictions. His comments described efforts at the time, not a guarantee that every territory would regain access.
Availability reports also need a date and location. On September 17, 2026, GamesRadar reported that Helldivers 2 and Horizon: Forbidden West had become unavailable for purchase on Steam in the UK. A Sony Interactive Entertainment spokesperson said the company was aware of an issue affecting selected Steam titles there and was working with Valve to address it. How many copies had Helldivers 2 sold by the reversal?
Sony Group Corporation reported 12.0 million cumulative combined PS5 and PC sell-through units as of May 5, 2024—87 days after the game’s February 8 release. This is a combined-platform figure for that measurement date, not a PC-only count or a current total. It also does not show how many players were affected by the planned linking rule or how many refunds the controversy caused. See Sony Group Corporation’s supplemental information.
Where should you request a Helldivers 2 refund?
Arrowhead’s support article, updated September 17, 2026, says the storefront that processed the purchase handles the refund. Steam purchasers should contact Steam Support and submit a request through their purchase history; PS5 and Xbox purchasers should contact the support service for the storefront where they bought the game.
