Sony is not promising to freeze PS5 prices. After raising recommended prices for PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal from April 2, 2026, the company has described a balancing act: higher memory costs push up manufacturing expenses, but passing those costs to buyers could slow console adoption. Its large PlayStation audience gives Sony another growth route—earning more recurring revenue from people who already play on the platform.
Why Sony raised PS5 prices
On March 27, 2026, Sony announced global increases to recommended retail prices for PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal, effective April 2. Sony attributed the decision to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” The new recommendations are regional, and retailers may set their own actual prices. Sony’s price announcement gives the figures below.
| Region | PS5 | PS5 Digital Edition | PS5 Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $649.99 | $599.99 | $899.99 |
| United Kingdom | £569.99 | £519.99 | £789.99 |
| Europe | €649.99 | €599.99 | €899.99 |
| Japan | ¥97,980 | ¥89,980 | ¥137,980 |
These are Sony’s recommended retail prices announced March 27, 2026, effective April 2—not a guarantee of the price at every store. Check Sony’s local announcement or retailers for other territories and current offers. PlayStation Portal was also included in the global increase, but Sony’s regional Portal prices are not listed in the figures above.
Why not simply pass every added cost to buyers?
Sony’s May 2026 corporate strategy Q&A said rising memory prices increase the bill of materials and manufacturing costs. The company also acknowledged the downside of raising prices to cover those costs: “if these increases are passed on through pricing, they could have a significant impact on console adoption.” In other words, a higher price may help offset cost pressure per console while making it harder to bring new players into the PS5 ecosystem. Sony’s strategy Q&A describes the considerations without promising a specific future price.

How the existing PlayStation audience changes the calculation
Sony’s reported installed base is substantial. As of June 30, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment listed more than 95 million PS5 units sold and 125 million PlayStation monthly active users. Sony defines monthly active users as estimated unique accounts that played games or used PlayStation services during the last month; the figure is not a count of PlayStation Plus subscribers. Sony’s business data provides the figures and definition.
That audience can support revenue beyond the initial hardware purchase, including recurring services, game sales and add-on content. GamesRadar’s August 31, 2026 report on a Wall Street Journal interview quoted CEO Hiroki Totoki saying, “we do not need to aggressively sell the console today,” and that Sony is “focusing on recurring revenue from the current user base.” These are remarks as transcribed by GamesRadar; the full interview transcript is not available in the cited reporting. They describe a business emphasis, not a decision to stop selling consoles or a guarantee that prices will not change. GamesRadar’s report uses a misleading “PS Plus users” characterization: Sony’s official 125 million figure is platform-wide monthly active users, not PS Plus subscribers.

What Sony is weighing besides hardware prices
Sony said it had secured the memory volumes needed for 2026, with pricing agreed to a certain extent. Its stated options include balancing hardware pricing against promotional spending, pursuing cost reductions and evaluating go-to-market approaches and possible business-model adjustments. Each addresses a different pressure:
- Hardware price versus adoption: Higher prices can help account for component costs, but Sony says they could significantly affect console adoption.
- Promotions versus margin: Promotional spending may support demand without changing the recommended price, but it is another cost to manage.
- Secured components versus future exposure: The 2026 memory volumes are secured, but Sony said it expected memory prices to remain elevated and supply-demand conditions tight through 2027. That was management’s planning assumption in May 2026, not a settled market forecast.
- New hardware sales versus ongoing revenue: Sony can seek more revenue from its current players while still selling consoles; the reported Totoki remarks do not establish that hardware has ceased to matter.
Does this mean another PS5 price increase is coming?
Sony’s statements do not establish that another increase is planned, nor do they rule one out. The company described cost pressures and several levers it may balance, while its April 2026 price changes show that prices can change. Its May Q&A also said Sony had made no decisions about next-generation platform timing or pricing; that is not a commitment to hold PS5 prices and does not confirm a PS6 release date.

Earlier, in its FY2025 Q2 Q&A, Sony said it intended to expand the PS5 install base during the year-end selling season while balancing supply-chain uncertainty and profitability, and declined to comment on pricing strategy. That older statement is context for the tradeoff—not a current pricing promise. Sony’s FY2025 Q2 Q&A predates the 2026 increase.

The confirmed consumer-facing change is the April 2, 2026 increase in Sony’s recommended prices, with regional prices and retailer offers varying. Sony’s public comments explain why the company is balancing cost recovery against adoption and why it sees current players as an important source of recurring revenue. They do not provide a timetable or trigger for another PS5 price change, so buyers should check local retailer prices rather than assume either a price freeze or an imminent increase.
