Steam Error E20 is a sign-in communication symptom, not a code Steam Support has publicly defined with one universal fix. Check Steam’s service status first, then compare Steam client and browser sign-in and narrow down whether the issue is tied to your device, network, or security settings.
What Steam Error E20 means
Steam users report E20 when the desktop client cannot complete sign-in, sometimes with a message such as “There was an error communicating with the Steam servers. Please try again later.” Steam Support’s published guidance does not define E20 itself or identify a single cause. Treat it as a connection symptom and troubleshoot the path between your client and Steam rather than assuming your account is broken.
A successful website login does not rule out a client connection problem. Steam says, “The Steam Client accesses your Steam account differently than your web browser does.” Steam Support explains the difference in its client sign-in guidance.
Work through these checks in order
-
Check whether Steam is having a broader issue
Start with Steam’s server and network troubleshooting guidance. If Steam is experiencing maintenance or an outage, wait and try again later instead of changing settings on your computer. Steam notes that timeouts while reaching Steam sites can indicate a system-wide issue.

Compare the client, browser, device, and network
Try signing in through a browser, then compare with the Steam client. If possible, test another device or network. If the website works but the client does not, that narrows the issue to a different connection path; it does not identify one definite cause. A problem limited to one device may involve its client, firewall, or another local program. A problem across devices on the same network points toward the network path, though it is not proof.
-
Restart Steam and test the connection
Close and reopen Steam, and restart the computer. If you are using Wi-Fi or a powerline adapter, test with a direct wired connection to the router if practical. Steam recommends this as a way to diagnose wireless or powerline connection problems. An Ethernet cable is useful only for this optional test; it is not a general E20 fix.

Review firewall and security settings
Check whether a firewall or security setting recently changed, and consult Steam’s guidance for allowing the client through your firewall. Steam also identifies potentially interfering background applications as a troubleshooting area. Avoid turning off protection broadly as a routine fix; make any Steam-specific adjustment cautiously and keep appropriate protection enabled.
-
Consider VPNs, proxies, and restricted networks
If you use a VPN or proxy, or are on a university or workplace network, test whether that connection is affecting Steam. Steam notes that some universities and proxies may block ports Steam needs, and that ISP restrictions can also affect connectivity. Follow the network administrator’s rules rather than trying to bypass them.

Troubleshoot browser sign-in separately
If the browser is the path that fails, temporarily disable browser extensions or try a different, unmodified browser. Steam’s browser troubleshooting page recommends these checks and directs users to Steam Support if login still fails.
-
Contact Steam Support if the error continues
Use Steam’s client sign-in help flow to submit a support request. Include a screenshot of the error and explain which tests you tried, such as whether browser login worked or another network changed the result.

What not to assume
Community posts describe mixed outcomes: one May 2024 report said a firewall setting or network-profile change resolved a client-only E20 problem, while other users reported waiting, clearing cache, reinstalling, or running network commands with varying results. These are individual experiences, not confirmed fixes for everyone.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
- OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
- Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
- Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
- Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.
- Do not assume a working website login proves the Steam client can connect; the two use different access paths.
- Do not treat cache deletion, reinstalling Steam, changing DNS or IP settings, repeated login attempts, or switching VPNs as established E20 fixes. Use a step only when Steam Support recommends it for your circumstances or you understand its effect.
- No published figure establishes how often E20 occurs or how likely any fix is to work.
