Leveling weapons unlocks stronger variants and unique cosmetics, but not every skin comes from that tree: some are tied to Datavault Ordeals, Accolades, or paid chapter packs.
How to unlock skins through Operations
- Open the Armoury on the Battle Barge. Select the weapon you want to progress. Its tree shows available weapon variants, upgrades, and cosmetic unlocks.
- Use the weapon in Operations. Missions provide experience for weapon progression, and Armoury Data is used to advance weapons. Focus Entertainment describes this loop as leveling weapons through missions to unlock more powerful variants and unique cosmetics (official gameplay overview).
- Check the requirement displayed on the cosmetic node. Unlock what the current game lists for that weapon, then select the skin in the Armoury’s customization options. Costs and requirements can vary by item; the official overview does not give a complete current cost list.
There is no supported universal number of missions or fixed Armoury Data cost for a skin. Use the live Armoury tree for the exact requirement rather than assuming every weapon follows the same schedule.
Which progression route has the skin you want?
| Route | What to do or spend | What it can unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon progression in Operations | Earn mission experience and Armoury Data, then progress the weapon tree. | Weapon variants and unique cosmetics. Exact item requirements appear in the current Armoury. |
| Datavault Ordeals | Complete Ordeals to earn Research Data; exchange it for rewards. | Research Data can be exchanged for Requisition Points and cosmetics, including Thunder Hammer and Auto Bolt Rifle skins, according to Focus Entertainment’s February 6, 2025 update (Datavault Update). |
| Accolades | Earn the specific Accolade named for the reward. | The November 25, 2025 Reclamation update announced six Hero weapon variants as Accolade rewards: Bolt Sniper Rifle, Heavy Bolter, Instigator Bolt Carbine, Heavy Bolt Pistol, Power Fist, and Thunder Hammer (Reclamation Update). |
| Paid chapter packs | Own the relevant pack; check the store for current availability. | Some packs include weapon skins. For example, the June 26, 2025 Siege update announcement listed Occulus Bolt Carbine, Stalker Bolt Rifle, and Combat Knife skins in the White Scars Chapter Pack (Siege Update). |
Ordeals are challenges across Campaign, PvE, and PvP. Focus’s January 2025 community update gave completing any Operations mission at Average Threat Level or higher as one example; check the Datavault for the Ordeals currently available (January Community Update).
Can you use an Operations skin in Eternal War?
Yes. Focus Entertainment says cosmetics earned in Operations can be used in Eternal War. The cross-mode rule applies to appearance, not combat progression: weapon upgrades and perks remain exclusive to PvE (official gameplay overview).

Why a skin may not appear in the weapon tree
- It may be an Ordeal reward. Look in the Datavault for its challenge and Research Data exchange path.
- It may require an Accolade. The named achievement or reward track is separate from the ordinary weapon progression tree.
- It may be part of a paid pack. Pack cosmetics are not unlocked merely by playing Operations. Pack contents and availability may change, so check the current in-game or platform store listing.
Focus’s May 21, 2026 Purgation Update announcement distinguishes free update content from paid chapter-pack cosmetics and lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC as platforms (Purgation Update). The announcement does not establish current inventory or prices for each pack.
