If South Park: The Stick of Truth crashes on your PC, start by identifying exactly when it fails, then work through Ubisoft Support’s launch suggestions. For a black screen or a window that minimizes on launch, you can also test a community-reported configuration change—but it is not a guaranteed fix. Players in the Steam support thread report different outcomes.
First, identify when the crash happens
Before changing settings, note the stage at which the game fails. “Crashing” can mean several different things, and that distinction helps you choose the relevant steps.

- The game exits before a window appears.
- It closes after the opening logos.
- A black screen appears, with or without audio.
- The game opens briefly, then minimizes.
Also record any error message, your Windows version, whether you launch through Steam or another storefront or launcher, your graphics card, and whether more than one display is connected.
Check the listed PC requirements
Steam lists The Stick of Truth as playable on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its product requirements specify a minimum of 2 GB RAM, a GeForce 8800 GT or Radeon HD 2600 XT with 512 MB VRAM and Shader Model 4.0, DirectX 9.0c, and 6 GB of storage. Steam’s separate client note says the Steam client supports Windows 10 and later as of January 1, 2024. That is the client’s policy, not a replacement for the game’s own requirements. Meeting the listed minimums does not prove that hardware is responsible for a crash; Steam’s general launch troubleshooting guidance notes that systems near minimum specifications can encounter launch or performance issues.
Try Ubisoft Support’s launch steps
In a Steam Player Support discussion about launch failures, Ubisoft Support recommended trying the following steps. Change one thing at a time, then test the game so you can tell whether anything helped.

- Reinstall both Visual C++ Redistributables. Install or reinstall the x86 and x64 versions, as Ubisoft Support specified.
- Install the DirectX End-User Runtimes. This is the runtime package Ubisoft Support named; the game’s DirectX 9.0c requirement is listed separately on Steam.
- Try the available compatibility settings. If the game offers a compatibility-mode option through its Windows shortcut or executable properties, test an appropriate mode for your system.
- Test with one display connected. Disconnect or disable additional monitors for a launch test, then restore your usual display setup if it makes no difference.
- Try running the game with administrator permissions. Use this as a troubleshooting test rather than a permanent change if it does not help.

For a black screen or minimize-on-launch issue
A community member in the same Steam discussion reported changing full_screen = 0 in both config.ini and engine.ini. Ubisoft Support acknowledged the workaround. It is a user-reported configuration change, not a universal official fix.

config.iniandengine.inifor the game. - Make a backup copy of each file before editing.
- In both files, change the
full_screensetting to0. - Save the edits and try launching the game.
- If the change does not help, restore the backup copies.
Use this only when the symptom fits—particularly a black screen or a game window that minimizes during launch. The forum discussion contains both reports of success and reports that launch failures persisted, so the setting may not address your problem.

Contact official support with the details you recorded: the exact failure stage, any error text, Windows version, storefront or launcher, graphics card, and display setup. Include which steps you tried and whether anything changed. Steam’s launch troubleshooting page offers general guidance, but it cannot identify the cause of every title- or PC-specific failure.
