South of Midnight is an atmospheric, story-led adventure whose Southern Gothic world, memorable presentation and music make a stronger impression than its combat. It is best suited to players who want a focused tale rooted in folklore—not an open world or a deep action system.
What is South of Midnight about?
After a hurricane devastates the town of Prospero, Hazel Flood sets out to find her missing mother. Along the way, she becomes a Weaver: someone with the ability to mend bonds and spirits. Her journey leads through a supernatural version of the American South, where family history, folklore and creatures called Haints shape the story.
The premise gives the game a clear emotional center. Hazel’s search is not just a trail of objectives; it draws on memory, inherited stories and the connections between people. ComicBook.com’s review rated the game 4 out of 5 and estimated roughly 10–12 hours for the story, though individual completion times will vary. ComicBook.com’s review also discloses that the outlet received an Xbox Series X copy from the publisher.
How does it play?
This is a linear, third-person action-adventure built around traversal, platforming, exploration, light puzzles and combat. Hazel moves through connected environments, using her abilities to navigate obstacles and confront supernatural threats. The structure keeps the story moving, but exploration is guided rather than open-ended; players looking for a large world to roam freely should adjust their expectations.

Traversal and exploration
Platforming and movement are central to the journey, and reviewers identify traversal as one of the game’s strengths. The environments are designed to carry Hazel forward through the narrative rather than support extensive detours. That focus suits a compact, directed adventure, but offers less freedom than an open-world game.
Combat
Hazel’s Weaver abilities give encounters a supernatural frame, but the combat does not sustain the same variety as the setting. TheXboxHub found that fights could become repetitive and also reported camera problems in some encounters. These are the outlet’s review observations, not a guarantee that every player will encounter the same issues. Its review gives the game 4.5 overall and thanks Xbox Game Studios for a free copy. What makes South of Midnight stand out?
A distinctive Southern Gothic world
The game’s stop-motion-inspired visual style is a defining part of its identity. Its environments and creature designs give the folklore a striking, sometimes unsettling presence. “Stop-motion-inspired” describes the aesthetic reviewers highlighted; it should not be taken as a claim that every animation was made using stop-motion techniques.
Story, performances and music
Reviewers praise the narrative, setting and voice work, while the music and vocals help carry the story rather than merely accompany the action. Together, those elements give the journey a strong sense of place. ComicBook.com reviewer Michael Murphy called it “an absolute must-play” for Xbox Game Pass subscribers in his review; that is his assessment, not a guarantee that the game is currently included in every plan or region.

What are the main drawbacks?
- Combat repetition: Encounters may feel less engaging as the game goes on if you want a deep or constantly evolving action system.
- Camera issues: TheXboxHub reports camera problems in some fights.
- Guided exploration: The linear route leaves less room for open-ended discovery.
- Some narrative loose ends: ComicBook.com notes unanswered story points and repetitive dialogue.
These are review-based criticisms, not universal outcomes. Their importance depends on what you want from the game: atmosphere and a focused story, or mechanical depth and freedom to explore.

It is an appealing choice if you value folklore, unusual art direction, strong performances and a self-contained story. The setting and audio-visual identity are the main reasons to play; the combat and guided structure are the compromises. If your priority is demanding combat or a sprawling world, this is a less natural fit.
