Yes. Firefly Studios announced a free Steam demo for Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition on January 21, 2025, nearly six months before its planned July 15 release. The game launched on that date, so the early-demo headline is historical, not a current launch notice. A second public demo followed in June 2025 with additional playable content.
What the January 2025 announcement said
Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition is Firefly Studios’ expanded remaster of the 2002 castle-building strategy game. Its January 21 announcement introduced a Steam demo and set July 15, 2025 as the planned launch date. Firefly described the edition as adding 20 AI lords, skirmish mode, larger maps, custom options, quality-of-life improvements, Steam multiplayer and Workshop integration. Firefly’s announcement framed the demo as part of Steam RTS Fest.
The original announcement’s “six months ahead” phrasing referred to the time between January 21 and the then-planned July 15 release. Firefly’s date was subsequently borne out: the full game released July 15, 2025. Steam’s product page now presents it as a released digital game, not an upcoming title.
What changed in the later demo
Firefly announced a second public demo on June 9, 2025. It included a Sands of Time mission, a Historical Campaign challenge and Custom Skirmish mode. The announcement also described a 10-mission co-op trail for two players, playable either with another person or an AI ally. These details describe the June demo announcement; they should not be assumed to describe every version of the earlier January demo.

What the Definitive Edition adds
Firefly and Steam describe a broader package than a visual update alone. Steam’s current listing names eight playable units, four new AI lords, several campaigns, two historical campaigns, four Sands of Time skirmish trails and a co-op trail. The listing also includes single-player, online PvP, online co-op and Steam Workshop support.
- Larger battles and maps: Firefly said in May 2025 that the unit cap was being raised to 10,000 soldiers in a single game, and that maps could be up to four times the original size. Both figures are developer-reported. Firefly’s May announcement also reported 150,000 demo downloads.
- More ways to play: Skirmishes, campaigns and co-op expand the original’s strategy sandbox, while Steam multiplayer and Workshop integration provide online play and user-created content.
- Updated presentation: Steam describes updated visuals and audio alongside the new content.
