Steam Reviews Can Now Include Optional Hardware Specs in Valve Beta

Valve’s February 2026 Steam beta reportedly lets reviewers attach optional hardware details to new or updated reviews, adding context to performance feedback without guaranteeing how a game will run on another PC.

Valve’s February 12, 2026 Steam Client Beta reportedly lets reviewers optionally add their hardware specifications to a new or updated game review. The extra context may help readers interpret performance complaints, but it is not a Valve benchmark, a compatibility guarantee, or a requirement for reviewers. The feature was reported as part of the beta; its availability in Steam’s stable client is not established here.

What is changing in Steam reviews?

The change most closely matching the headline is an optional hardware-information field for individual reviews. According to Engadget’s February 13, 2026 report on Valve’s beta update, a reviewer can attach details about the hardware used when writing a new review or updating an existing one.

That information can help readers assess performance feedback. A report of stuttering or low frame rates means something different depending on the system behind it. But the specifications are supplied as review context: they do not establish that Valve tested the game on that hardware, and they cannot tell every reader exactly how the game will run on their own system.

How the review-related changes differ

The 2026 hardware field is not the only recent change to Steam reviews. It is useful to distinguish individual review context from data shared with Valve and from changes to review-score presentation.

Optional hardware details, reported in the 2026 beta A reviewer may attach information about the hardware used to write a new or updated review. Adds context to an individual review; it is not a performance certification.
SteamOS frame-rate sharing, reported in the same beta An optional feature shares anonymized frame-rate data with Valve. Engadget reports that Valve said the data would not be connected to a Steam account, while identifying the hardware type. Shares performance data with Valve; it is separate from reviewer-submitted hardware details.
Language-specific review scores, introduced in 2025 Steam displays a score for a language when the review thresholds described by GameSpot are met. Adds a language-specific score alongside the overall score and broader review information.

Optional SteamOS frame-rate data

The beta reportedly also adds an option for SteamOS users to share anonymized frame-rate data with Valve. Engadget says Valve described the data as stored without a connection to the user’s Steam account, while still identifying the kind of hardware in use. The feature concerns SteamOS devices, including Steam Deck and some third-party handhelds; it is not the same as adding hardware details to a review.

A reason for disagreeing with Deck Verified

Engadget also reports a change to a Steam Deck Verified feedback prompt: users who disagree with a rating can give a reason. This feedback prompt is separate from both review hardware details and frame-rate sharing.

How language-specific review scores work

In August 2025, Steam changed how it presents scores for games with enough reviews in a language. GameSpot’s report describes the thresholds as more than 2,000 publicly visible reviews for a game and at least two reviews in at least one language. These are thresholds for language-specific scores, not for attaching hardware specifications to an individual review.

The language-specific score appears alongside the overall score and other review information; it does not replace access to the broader information. Valve’s stated rationale, quoted by GameSpot, was that “customers in different regions of the world may have vastly different experiences from each other for the same game.”

What the hardware details can—and cannot—tell you

  • Useful context: Hardware details can help readers judge whether a performance report came from a system similar to their own.
  • Not a guarantee: One reviewer’s experience does not establish how the game will perform on every PC, configuration, or settings combination.
  • Not a score rule: The reported feature adds information to a review; it is distinct from the 2025 language-score presentation change and Valve’s review-bomb policy.
  • Optional and beta-reported: Reviewers are not required to provide specifications, and the report does not establish that the feature has reached Steam’s stable client.

How this differs from Steam’s review-bomb policy

Valve’s 2019 policy addresses off-topic review bombs, not hardware information. In “User Reviews Revisited,” published March 15, 2019, Valve said it would identify off-topic review-bomb periods and exclude reviews from those periods from the Review Score calculation. The affected reviews would remain visible, and users could opt to include them in scores. That policy concerns how scores are calculated; the 2026 beta’s reported hardware field provides context for an individual review.

Availability: beta report, not confirmed stable rollout

Valve’s Steam Client Beta announcement is the primary announcement for the February 12, 2026 update, but its page text was not accessible in the available source view. The feature details above rely on Engadget’s account of that update. The available reporting does not confirm whether the hardware-information field has since reached the stable Steam client, so check the client’s current release notes or interface for its present availability.
