Shun Nakamura, producer of Sonic X Shadow Generations, has expressed personal interest in revisiting Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), commonly called Sonic ’06. That is not an announcement that Sega or Sonic Team is making a remake: the report said no project had been confirmed in production.
What did the Sonic Team producer say?
In November 2024, Push Square reported that Nakamura said at a fan event in Indonesia that he “personally wishes for the opportunity” to revisit Sonic ’06. The report offered no project details and explicitly said there was no confirmation that a remake was in production. Push Square’s report
Nintendo Life’s account the following day placed the remark in a fan-event discussion about remakes or remasters of older Sonic games, including Sonic Heroes and Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. It likewise described Nakamura’s interest as personal, not as an announcement on Sega’s behalf. Nintendo Life’s account
Is Sonic ’06 getting an official remake?
No official remake was confirmed in the 2024 reports. Nakamura’s stated wish is evidence of interest, not evidence that Sega has approved, funded, or begun development. There is no confirmed release date or platform in those reports.

- More Friends, More Fun: Play with up to 3 other players in local Co-op and challenge players from around the world in Battle Mode!
In October 2026, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka was reported as saying the team’s resources are limited and that it would rather use them to make new games than remakes and remasters. That is general context about priorities, not a direct update on Nakamura’s idea or a specific decision about Sonic ’06. Nintendo Life’s report on Iizuka’s comments
Why is it called the “worst” Sonic game?
“Worst” is a subjective headline judgment, not an objective franchise ranking. Sonic ’06 was poorly received; Push Square reports a Metacritic score of 43. That review-aggregate score indicates a negative critical reception, but it cannot establish that every player or critic considers it the series’ worst game. Push Square’s report

Is Project ’06 the remake Nakamura wants?
No. Project ’06 is an unofficial fan project led by creator ChaosX, not a Sega or Sonic Team remake. GameSpot describes work on the project that improves movement and physics. Its existence should not be confused with an official remake announcement, and its changes do not establish what an official version would include. GameSpot’s report on Project ’06

SEGA Sammy Holdings reported Sonic licensing revenue of ¥5.7 billion for the fiscal year ended March 2022 and ¥13.3 billion for the fiscal year ended March 2025. The company attributed the increase to the films, merchandising, and related activities. These figures indicate the broader commercial importance of the Sonic property; they are not evidence of demand for, or a decision to make, a Sonic ’06 remake.
