Sony confirmed on January 16, 2025, that it had canceled two live-service projects. GameSpot reported that one was a God of War game in development at Bluepoint Games; Sony had not publicly announced the title. The available reporting does not establish the project’s gameplay, release plans, or a specific reason for its cancellation.
What Sony confirmed—and what was reported about God of War
Sony confirmed to Bloomberg that it had canceled two live-service projects: one associated with Bluepoint Games and another with Bend Studio. GameSpot identified Bluepoint’s project as based on God of War. That identification comes from reporting, not from a public announcement of the game by Sony. GameSpot’s January 16, 2025 report covers both cancellations.

Because the God of War project was unannounced, there was no public title or official product page to describe it. The cited reporting does not establish a release date, a playable build, or detailed gameplay. Claims about its plot, characters, setting, mechanics, development progress, or budget should not be treated as confirmed facts.
Why was the Bluepoint God of War game canceled?
Sony did not provide a project-specific explanation in the cited announcement, so a definitive reason is not established. It is possible to place the cancellation in the context of Sony’s broader portfolio strategy, but that context should not be mistaken for an explanation of this individual decision.

In an October 29, 2024 company statement, Hermen Hulst, then CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, described a portfolio review and said Sony would continue developing live-service capabilities alongside its single-player work. He wrote: “We will take the lessons learned from Concord and continue to advance our live service capabilities to deliver future growth in this area.” The statement describes Sony’s wider strategy after Concord; it does not say why the Bluepoint project was later canceled. Timeline: cancellation and Bluepoint’s later closure
- October 29, 2024: Sony published Hulst’s statement on studio changes and its continuing investment in live-service capabilities.
- January 16, 2025: Sony confirmed two live-service project cancellations. GameSpot reported that Bluepoint’s project was based on God of War.
- February 19, 2026: Game Developer reported Sony’s confirmation that Bluepoint would close in March after a business review. That closure came later and was a separate development; it was not part of the January 2025 cancellation announcement. Read Game Developer’s report on Bluepoint’s closure.
At the time of the 2025 cancellations, Sony said the studios would not close as a result of those decisions and that it was working with them on their next projects, according to GameSpot. Bluepoint’s subsequent closure does not change what Sony said then; it reflects a later business review.
