First identify what “not loading” means: the inventory panel may not open, it may open without items, items may be missing from one location, or item entries may appear with black images. Those symptoms do not establish one cause or one universal fix. Check RSI service status, confirm the storage location, and use graphics troubleshooting only when the fault is visibly a rendering problem.
Identify which inventory problem you have
Before changing settings, note what is actually failing. Is the entire screen black, or are only inventory icons black? Does the panel fail to open, stay empty, or show entries without their visuals? Are items missing everywhere or only at one city or station? The distinction matters: RSI documents service-access and post-patch missing-item issues, but its reviewed guidance does not identify a specific cause or confirmed fix for black inventory icons.
- Panel will not open or populate: check for a service issue first.
- Items are absent from one location: check the storage location associated with those items.
- Item entries appear but images are black: treat this as a possible visual fault, not proof that the item data is gone.
- The whole screen is black or objects elsewhere fail to render: graphics troubleshooting may be relevant.
Check RSI Status before changing your PC
RSI has documented a live-services disruption that made player inventories inaccessible during an incident affecting the Persistent Universe. That incident was marked resolved; it is historical evidence that inventory failures can be service-side, not evidence of a current outage. Check the RSI status page for current notices before reinstalling drivers or changing local settings.
Check the inventory location
Star Citizen separates personal, local, and ship inventory. Press I to open inventory, or hold F, right-click to open the Personal Inner Thoughts action ring, then choose Personal Inventory. Local storage is tied to the city or station where it is stored, so an item absent at your current location may still be stored elsewhere. If items went missing after a patch, report the issue
RSI’s Alpha 4.10.1 Known Issues page, updated September 16, 2026, says that after a patch some players may find that their inventory is “not as they left it” after first logging in. RSI asks affected players to add relevant information to Issue Council report STARC-194626. The page also lists an Assets mobiGlas app that remains stuck loading, with no workaround documented there. When reporting, include the current game version, when the issue began, which locations you checked, whether items are absent or only have black images, and any steps that changed the behavior. This helps distinguish a missing-item report from an icon-rendering symptom; it does not guarantee recovery.

Use graphics troubleshooting only for visual faults
RSI says outdated graphics drivers may contribute to black screens, visual artifacts, and objects failing to render, and recommends a clean installation of the latest stable driver. That is general rendering guidance, not a confirmed fix for black inventory icons. If you are seeing broader rendering problems, follow RSI’s graphics-driver guidance.
RSI also describes a black-screen issue associated with Nvidia Smooth Motion or AMD Fluid Motion Frames and advises disabling those overrides when affected. The article does not say those features cause black inventory items. Consult RSI’s graphics settings guidance if the whole screen is affected and one of those overrides is enabled; do not assume changing it will restore inventory icons.

Do not use Character Repair as a routine inventory fix
RSI calls Character Repair a last resort and says to try workarounds and report the issue first. The process cannot be halted or reversed once it begins. RSI warns: “All equipment and items that were missing at the time of repair will remain lost.” Equipped items are unequipped and sent to inventory, but items already missing when repair starts are not recovered, and Support cannot restore items lost through the tool. Read RSI’s Character Repair instructions and follow its account guidance only if you have a qualifying character-state problem; this is not an established remedy for black icons or ordinary missing inventory.
