In Starfield, the best XP route depends on where your character is in the game: early on, earn XP through quests, discoveries, minigames, and manageable fights; in the mid game, add crafting supported by gathered or extracted resources; and in the late game, choose between those activities based on your build and what you have unlocked. Bethesda’s official guidance lists these activities as XP sources but does not identify a single fastest location or publish verified XP-per-hour comparisons.
Early game: earn XP as you explore
Before you have the skills, materials, or infrastructure for a dedicated crafting loop, make progress through several activities as you travel:

- Complete quests. Quest completion is one of Bethesda’s listed XP sources, so follow objectives that fit your current progress rather than detouring for an unverified farm.
- Discover locations. Explore places you encounter along the way; discovering locations also grants XP.
- Take manageable fights. Defeating enemies provides XP. Choose encounters that suit your current equipment and combat abilities.
- Complete minigames. Bethesda lists minigames among the XP sources, so take opportunities that appear during normal play.
Boost Pack Training requires the relevant skill and an equipped boost pack. Stealth attacks are possible without the Stealth skill, while that skill adds a detection meter. These are gameplay options, not separately confirmed XP multipliers.
Mid game: add crafting and resource gathering
Once you have materials and access to workbenches, crafting items, food, and weapon mods gives you another XP path. Outposts can supply resources for this approach, but building one takes setup: find useful resources, establish the outpost, build extractors, and provide power.

Set up an outpost for resources
- Scan planets to identify resources that suit the crafting materials you need.
- Land where those resources are available and place an Outpost Beacon.
- Build extractors for the resources you want to collect.
- Provide power and connect the power source to the extractors.
- Use workbenches at the outpost to craft items and upgrades.
Bethesda says Outpost Engineering is required before building an outpost on a planet with an extreme environment. The official guidance does not identify a recipe with the highest XP yield or specify resource production speeds, so choose crafts based on your available materials, unlocked research, and convenience rather than assuming one recipe is optimal.
Late game: choose a route that fits your build
With more skills and infrastructure available, you can keep earning XP from combat, quests, new discoveries, minigames, and crafting. A developed combat character may prefer fights and questing; a well-equipped outpost network may make resource-backed crafting more convenient. These are practical choices based on the documented XP activities, not measured route rankings.

- The goal of this epic journey? The answer to humanity's greatest question
When deciding what to do next, weigh the time needed to prepare, travel and resource overhead, the difficulty of available enemies, the recipes and materials you have, and whether you also want quest or exploration progress. Changing activity can also keep progression varied without relying on a claimed best farm.
Use the Database and production information to manage your options
Bethesda’s April 7, 2026 Starfield Update 1.16.236 added Database tracking for known locations, resources, and recipes, along with outpost production-rate information. These features can help you keep track of what you have found and what your outposts produce; the update notes do not say they increase XP.

- TELL YOUR STORY - In Starfield the most important story is the one you tell with your character. Start your journey by customizing your appearance and deciding your Background and Traits. Will you be an experienced explorer, a charming diplomat, a stealthy cyber runner, or something else entirely? The choice is yours. Decide who you will be and what you will become.
- EXPLORE OUTER SPACE - Venture through the stars and explore more than 1000 planets. Navigate bustling cities, explore dangerous bases, and traverse wild landscapes. Meet and recruit a memorable cast of characters, join in the adventures of various factions, and embark on quests across the Settled Systems. A new story or experience is always waiting to be discovered.
- CAPTAIN THE SHIP OF YOUR DREAMS - Pilot and command the ship of your dreams. Personalize the look of your ship, modify critical systems including weapons and shields, and assign crew members to provide unique bonuses. In deep space you will engage in high-stakes dogfights, encounter random missions, dock at star stations, and even board and commandeer enemy ships to add to your collection.
- DISCOVER, COLLECT, BUILD - Explore planets and discover the fauna, flora, and resources needed to craft everything from medicine and food to equipment and weapons. Build outposts and hire a crew to passively extract materials and establish cargo links to transfer resources between them. Invest these raw materials into research projects to unlock unique crafting recipes.
- LOCK AND LOAD - Space can be a dangerous place. A refined combat system gives you the tools to deal with any situation. Whether you prefer long-range rifles, laser weapons, or demolitions, each weapon type can be modified to complement your playstyle. Zero G environments add a chaotic spectacle to combat, while boost packs give players freedom to maneuver like never before.
The same update added adjustable Legendary Enemy Modifier settings. Its notes do not establish an XP bonus from changing those settings, so do not treat them as a proven XP-boosting method.

Bethesda’s official XP guidance identifies activities that award experience, but the sources cited here do not compare their rates or verify a fastest location. There is no substantiated XP-per-hour figure or universally best farm to recommend. Use quests, discoveries, minigames, combat, and crafting according to your current access, materials, and preferred playstyle.
