State of Decay 2’s Update 38, “Legacy Awaits,” was the game’s final content update. What Update 38 changed
Undead Labs announced “Legacy Awaits” on October 22, 2024, describing it as the final update for State of Decay 2. The studio said its resources were shifting to State of Decay 3, and that the update would address long-standing issues, improve quality of life, and make formerly gated or seasonal content available permanently. Previously gated and seasonal content
Items that had been time-exclusive, including the Wizard Van and winter outfits, became available to find in containers throughout the world. This removes the seasonal or time-limited barrier: players can scavenge for the content rather than waiting for a limited-time availability window.
New scavengable cosmetics
Undead Labs also placed newly released cosmetics in containers. The announcement names these examples:

The announcement says these items were scattered in containers for players to scavenge; it does not establish a specific container type or guarantee that every cosmetic uses an identical acquisition method.
Fixes and quality-of-life work
Addressing long-standing issues and making quality-of-life improvements were stated goals of Update 38. The available announcement text does not provide a dependable, complete list of individual fixes, so it is not possible to treat any itemized list as exhaustive.

How to get the newly available content
- Load into the game and search containers as you scavenge the world.
- Check containers for formerly gated items such as the Wizard Van and winter outfits, as well as the newly released cosmetics listed above.
- Keep exploring if a particular item does not appear; the studio describes the items as available through containers, not as guaranteed finds in a particular location.
Is State of Decay 2 still receiving updates?
No further content updates are promised: Undead Labs called Update 38 the final update, and the studio’s support page confirms the final content update was in October 2024. Undead Labs summed up the announcement this way: “This is our final update for State of Decay 2, but this is not the end of the journey!” The studio said its resources were moving to State of Decay 3.
