Starfield: Shattered Space sits at 62 on Metacritic’s overall critic page, classified as “Mixed or Average.” The page snapshot accessed October 8, 2026 shows 23 critic reviews: 2 positive, 21 mixed, and 0 negative. That is an aggregator snapshot, not a permanent score or a unanimous verdict. The selected reviews point to a clear question for players: is House Va’ruun’s story and handcrafted homeworld enough if you want more than a quest-focused expansion?

What the critic score says

Metacritic’s overall Starfield: Shattered Space Reviews page displayed a 62 Metascore from 23 critic reviews when accessed October 8, 2026. Its displayed breakdown was 2 positive, 21 mixed, and 0 negative, placing the expansion in the “Mixed or Average” category. The page also showed a 4.8 user score from 188 user ratings; that is a separate audience measure, not part of the critic score.

These figures describe the page at that date and can change as ratings or reviews are added. The PC-specific Metacritic review view displays 24 reviews, so its count should not be combined with the 23-review total on the overall title page.

What critics praise—and what they question

The selected review excerpts suggest a divide between the expansion’s setting and story, and the amount it changes the wider game. They are examples from displayed reviews, not a tally of every critic’s opinion.

House Va’ruun lore and the central story

Some selected reviews value the expansion’s focus on House Va’ruun and its lore. Others question the story’s execution or the consequences of its events. If the faction’s mystery is a major draw for you, the premise may carry more weight than the mixed overall label suggests; the excerpts do not establish that critics agreed on the story’s payoff.

A more focused, handcrafted setting

Bethesda takes the story to Va’ruun’kai, House Va’ruun’s homeworld, where a vortex has devastated much of Dazra and the player investigates what happened and what became of survivors. Bethesda describes the location as handcrafted. IGN’s selected review excerpt welcomed its more traditional, populated Bethesda-style open-world structure, contrasting it with travel among mostly barren worlds. Other displayed excerpts describe the setting as underused, so the promise of a focused location did not land equally for every reviewer.

Quest content rather than a broad systems overhaul

IGN’s excerpt also notes lore and quest content but says the expansion adds few lasting gameplay systems, powers, or skills. That makes expectations important: the cited criticism is about how much the expansion changes play across the wider game, not whether it contains new quests. The selected excerpts also include criticism of familiar quest design.

What Shattered Space is, and how to start it

Bethesda announced Shattered Space as the first major Starfield expansion, launching September 30, 2024 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. The launch announcement describes the trip to Va’ruun’kai and the investigation surrounding the devastation of Dazra. See Bethesda’s launch announcement.

To begin its discovery sequence, players must first complete the introductory main-quest mission “One Small Step.” Bethesda recommended level 35 for the best experience; it did not describe level 35 as a hard entry requirement. The recommendation and launch details appear in Bethesda’s September 27, 2024 launch guide.

Who is most likely to appreciate it?

  • Consider it if House Va’ruun’s lore and a self-contained mystery are your main reasons to play, or you want a handcrafted setting with a more conventional open-world structure.
  • Temper expectations if you want new powers, skills, or systems that substantially reshape the broader game. The cited IGN excerpt characterizes those lasting additions as limited.
  • Weigh the mixed story response if narrative consequences and quest design matter more to you than the setting itself; selected excerpts praise the lore while raising questions about execution, consequences, or familiar design.

Check current editions, availability, and pricing before buying; the launch guide does not establish today’s price or terms. Its PC storage and hardware specifications are also launch-era guidance, so consult current system requirements rather than relying on those figures as current.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
