To add a mod to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl on PC, follow the installation method on that mod’s page. For a Steam Workshop mod, subscribe through Workshop; for a download from another site, use the author’s stated manager or manual steps. First check that the mod supports your game version and list any required dependencies. There is no verified universal manual-install folder path for every mod and storefront.
Before installing: check compatibility and instructions
Choose the mod you want, then read its current page before downloading. Mods can use different file layouts and installation methods, so do not assume that instructions for one mod apply to another.
- Game version: Check which version of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 the mod supports, and compare it with the version installed on your PC.
- Dependencies: Note any required mods or tools and install them only as their authors instruct.
- Installation method: Look for explicit directions, such as subscribing through Steam Workshop, using a named mod manager, or copying files to a specific location.
- Reversibility: Check how the author says to disable or remove the mod in case it causes problems.
Steam Workshop and third-party mod downloads are separate routes. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Steam Workshop has a mod catalog and collections, but listings are user-created and may change. GSC’s creator documentation also covers publication to Steam Workshop and mod.io; that documentation describes mod creation and testing rather than a universal consumer installation process.
Install a Steam Workshop mod
- Open the mod’s Workshop listing and check its description for supported game versions, dependencies, and any special steps.
- Use Steam’s Subscribe option on the listing. GSC’s documentation confirms that subscribing to a privately uploaded Workshop mod mounts it in-game for testing.
- Launch S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 and check that the mod is active and behaving as described. If the listing gives additional steps, follow those too.
Install a mod downloaded from another site
- Read the mod page and download only the files and dependencies the author identifies for your game version.
- Follow the listed installation method exactly. If the author names a mod manager, use that manager only if the mod’s instructions support it. Otherwise, use the author’s manual procedure.
- Do not copy files into a guessed folder. The right location can depend on the mod and storefront, and a universal manual path for downloaded mods is not established.
- Start the game and check the mod’s expected behavior. If it fails to load, revisit the mod’s compatibility notes and installation steps before changing files.
Nexus Mods has a Vortex extension for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, showing that a manager option exists. Its presence does not mean every mod requires Vortex, that every download can be installed through it, or that GSC endorses it. Use a manager only when it suits the individual mod’s instructions.

Keep Zone Kit separate from installing an existing mod
GSC’s Zone Kit is the official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 ModSDK for creating, packaging, and publishing mods. It is a creator workflow, not an established requirement for installing ordinary player-made mods. The setup described in GSC’s 2025 guide requires a purchased base game and estimates approximately 700 GB of free disk space for that mod-creation workflow; that figure is not a player-mod installation requirement.
Likewise, GSC’s documented s2gamebuildSavedModsStaged location is where successfully packaged creator files are placed in the SDK workflow. It is not established as the installation folder for player downloads. Do not use it as a general-purpose destination unless the specific mod’s instructions say to.

Troubleshoot problems after installing or updating
- The mod does not appear: Confirm that you used the specified source and installation method, met its dependencies, and are running a supported game version.
- The game becomes unstable or performance worsens after a game patch: Disable the mods while troubleshooting. GSC warns that game updates can make mods incompatible and recommends disabling them if stability or performance problems occur after an update.
- You used a third-party manager or tool: Check that tool’s own instructions and terms. GSC says it is not responsible for third-party tools and warns that tools or mods can cause performance issues or software conflicts.
When the game works again, re-enable or reinstall mods according to their authors’ current instructions, checking compatibility before adding them back.
