Lynels are powerful enemies found across Hyrule’s Surface and Depths. Thonky’s location guide reports 34 locations and supplies coordinates and landmarks to help you find them; the safest basic approach is to prepare defensively, aim for headshots, and dodge carefully for an opening. Exact drops and drop rates are not established by the sources cited here.

Where to find Lynels

Thonky reports 34 Lynel locations, including Surface encounters and locations in the Depths. Its coordinates are useful alongside the in-game map, but the examples below are not a complete location list. See Thonky’s Lynel locations and coordinates for its maintained entries.

Area Lynel and landmark Coordinates
Surface Blue-Maned Lynel in Lanayru Wetlands, northeast of Sahasra Slope Skyview Tower 1990, -0300, 0009
Depths Blue-Maned Lynel beneath Woodland Stable 1037, 1131, -0474
Depths White-Maned Lynel in the Floating Coliseum -1121, -1170, -0499

Use the surface/Depths designation as well as the coordinate readout: the same coordinate format does not by itself tell you which layer to explore. The cited guide reports 34 locations, but that count is its reported inventory rather than an independently verified in-game census.

How to fight a Lynel

Approach the fight as a timing challenge, not a damage race. Game8’s Lynel guidance recommends aiming arrows at the head, dodging to seek Flurry Rush openings, and mounting when an opportunity arises. These are tactical options that depend on aim and timing, not guaranteed outcomes. Game8’s Lynel combat guide covers those recommendations.

#1 Best Overall
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - For Nintendo Switch 2
  • Enhanced performance and visuals exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Explore the skies, caves, and vast lands of Hyrule in a massive open-world adventure.
  • Wield new and returning abilities to craft solutions, vehicles, and weapons.
  • Discover the mystery behind the spreading gloom threatening the kingdom.
  • Use the ZELDA NOTES app to share, compare, and earn daily bonuses.
  • Headshots: A well-aimed arrow to the head can create an opening. This option calls for accurate aim and does not remove the need to watch the Lynel’s next move.
  • Dodge and Flurry Rush: Watch the attack and try to dodge at the right moment to create a Flurry Rush opportunity. The timing is the key demand; do not assume every dodge will produce one.
  • Mount when possible: Game8 describes mounting as a chance to deal damage. Treat it as an opening to use when available rather than a repeatable exploit.

These approaches differ in what they ask of you: headshots reward aim, while dodge-based openings require learning the enemy’s timing and bring you into close combat. The available guidance does not establish a measured damage or success-rate advantage for either method.

Prepare before engaging

Nintendo’s beginner guide recommends upgrading armor at Great Fairies to make Link less susceptible to damage. It also explains that materials can provide tactical advantages in combat. Its general examples include Bomb Flowers, Puffshrooms, Muddle Buds, and Dazzlefruit, but the guide does not establish that each has a specific Lynel effect. Choose equipment and materials you understand rather than relying on an unsupported Lynel-specific trick. Nintendo’s beginner tips provide broader preparation advice.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Ultrahand: Using the new Ultrahand ability, Link can pick up, move, and rotate almost any object, and can even attach objects together to create bridges, vehicles, and more!
  • Fuse: Magically fuse almost any object to Link’s current weapon, shield, or arrow to increase durability, damage, or even add a new effect. Experiment with lots of different combinations to come up with surprising—and sometimes hilarious—results!
  • Ascend: Add a new dimension to your exploration with Ascend, which gives Link the ability to pass through solid objects above him. Rise up through ceilings, hillsides, and even certain enemies to create seemingly impossible shortcuts.
  • Recall: Use Recall to make objects in motion move backward through time, letting Link ride fallen boulders skyward, recover thrown weapons, or send projectiles back where they came from.

Nintendo also notes that enemy color indicates relative strength for many enemies of the same type and gives a general red-to-blue-to-black-to-white progression. That is broad guidance, not a complete Lynel classification or a substitute for judging your own equipment and readiness. If you are under-equipped, Nintendo explicitly says avoiding a fight is an option. Nintendo’s tips on enemy strength and combat explain the general advice.

What do Lynels drop?

The available sources do not establish a complete Lynel drop table, variant-specific materials, drop probabilities, or exact Fuse values. Because those details are not substantiated here, this guide does not assign particular drops or rates to a Lynel type. Thonky’s page is useful for locating encounters, while Game8’s accessible guidance supports the basic combat options above; neither supports publishing exact drop odds in this article.

Printed and physical references

Nintendo confirms that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has a physical Nintendo Switch edition. Piggyback separately describes a Complete Official Guide with an atlas covering the Surface, Sky, and Depths, as well as enemy and item coverage. The guide is a broader companion reference, not a substitute for a verified Lynel drop table. Nintendo’s game listing confirms the game edition; Piggyback’s guide page describes the printed guide.
