Spoilers: This guide covers the main-story quest choice that leads toward the Unity. To build the Armillary on your ship, choose the ship placement during A High Price to Pay, then use the screen to the right of the cockpit. When One Giant Leap later asks you to assemble it, interact with that screen and add all your artifacts.
Build the Armillary on your ship
- Reach the placement choice. Progress through A High Price to Pay until you speak with Vladimir about protecting the artifacts. Choose to build the Armillary on your ship. Bethesda’s quest walkthrough documents this ship-or-outpost choice.
- Use the cockpit screen. Return to your ship and interact with the screen to the right of the cockpit. This is the ship’s Armillary interaction; you do not add it as a component through the ship builder.
- Add the artifacts when prompted. Later, during One Giant Leap, return to the ship and interact with the screen to assemble the Armillary using all artifacts. Bethesda’s walkthrough for the quest describes the choice to proceed toward the Unity or wait.
What happens after you assemble it
With all artifacts in the Armillary, you can choose to enter the Unity or postpone that step. If you want to continue making ordinary grav jumps instead, remove the artifacts from the Armillary. Bethesda’s One Giant Leap walkthrough advises saving before the consequential choice and notes that entering the Unity leads to a new game plus.
Ship or outpost: where should you build it?
Bethesda documents both placements. The ship option uses the cockpit screen; the outpost option uses the outpost builder’s Quest tab. Choose based on where you want the artifacts stored and which interaction suits you.
GameSpot’s 2023 guide reported that, in its playthrough, placing the Armillary on the ship was associated with more Starborn encounters in space. That is a secondary observation, not a confirmed gameplay rule; the guide also said its authors had not tried the outpost route.

If the cockpit screen has no interaction prompt
- Check that the main quest has advanced to the Armillary objective. The screen may not offer the relevant interaction before the quest calls for it.
- Make sure you are using the screen to the right of the cockpit, rather than looking for a ship-builder component.
- If the objective is active and the screen still does not respond, the cited Bethesda walkthroughs do not establish a general fix. They do not confirm a particular ship, platform, or save workaround as reliable.
