Stay Out of the House is a strong fit if you want a tense, stealth-focused horror game about sneaking through a dangerous house and finding a way out—not an action game built around constant combat. Puppet Combo’s setup makes listening, hiding, exploring, and solving your escape route central to the experience. Its retro presentation and explicit slasher gore are part of the appeal for some players and a reason to pass for others.
What kind of horror game is Stay Out of the House?
Developed and published by Puppet Combo, Stay Out of the House was released on Steam on October 13, 2022. The Steam listing describes a single-player escape horror game: you are trapped in a house controlled by a cannibal serial killer known as the Butcher, and must find a way out.
The publisher’s description emphasizes staying quiet and out of sight, avoiding traps, exploring rooms, and searching for clues and useful tools. It also advertises multiple escape routes and a .38 caliber revolver as one possible way to fight back. Those details describe the game’s advertised options; the central premise is evasion and escape, not a promise of sustained gunplay. Steam categorizes it under action, adventure, indie, and simulation, with user-defined tags such as survival horror, stealth, puzzle, nonlinear, resource management, and multiple endings. These labels help with discovery, but do not by themselves define how the game plays.
Is it scary?
Its fear comes from vulnerability and uncertainty: the Butcher can hear you, so moving carelessly or making noise can turn exploration into a threat. The need to stay hidden gives ordinary movement through the house a stealth-game tension, while traps, clues, and tools make exploration consequential. If you enjoy being hunted while you work out where to go next, this premise is likely to land. If you want to overpower enemies regularly or avoid being pursued, it may not suit you.

The presentation is deliberately retro and low-resolution rather than aiming for modern visual fidelity. Metacritic’s listing characterizes the game as atmospheric, with PS1-style graphics, substantial gore, and jumpscares it says do not feel cheap. That is an attributed critical description, not a guarantee that every player will respond the same way.
How much gore and disturbing content should you expect?
Steam’s mature-content note specifically mentions corpses, blood, guts, and decapitation. The slasher imagery is a meaningful part of the game’s identity, not just a vague horror label. Consider that content note before buying if graphic violence is something you prefer to avoid.

What do reviews say?
Steam review figures are a snapshot accessed October 8, 2026: the storefront displayed “Very Positive” all-time reception, with 94% positive among 1,698 reviews, and “Very Positive” recent reception, with 100% positive among 20 recent reviews. These are changing user-review proportions, not fixed scores or independent study results; check the live Steam listing for current totals.
The Steam page also displays publication excerpts that praise the game’s approach. Bloody Disgusting calls it “a great one to jump into” for players new to Puppet Combo games (9). Destructoid describes it as “the whole cake” after earlier slasher titles “were just licking the spoon” (8.5). Rely On Horror calls it an “inspired and accomplished effort,” highlighting immersion and interactivity (9). These are publication statements reproduced by Steam, rather than a substitute for deciding whether stealth, retro visuals, and gore fit your tastes.

Can your computer run it?
The Steam listing gives these minimum requirements. Check the live page before purchase in case platform details have changed.

There is an important distinction for Windows buyers: although the game’s listing gives Windows 7 SP1+ as its minimum, Steam states that its client supports Windows 10 and later as of January 1, 2024. The game requirement and the client requirement are not the same thing.

Steam marks the game as Steam Deck Verified. The store page lists partial controller support and explicitly names Xbox controllers. It also lists English, French, Spanish (Spain), Japanese, Portuguese (Portugal), Russian, and Spanish (Latin America) interface support, plus 29 Steam achievements.

Puppet Combo’s FAQ said the console version was “Out Now” in June 2023, but that statement does not identify the supported consoles or establish availability in every region. Check the current official store listing for your specific console and region before purchasing.

Who should play it?
- Good fit: players who enjoy stealth and evasion, searching environments for clues and tools, and figuring out how to escape rather than relying on combat.
- Likely to appeal: fans of low-resolution retro horror and slasher imagery who are comfortable with graphic gore.
- Consider another game: if you want frequent direct combat, modern visual fidelity, or horror without the listed depictions of blood, guts, corpses, and decapitation.
