To use Favorites in Starfield, assign items from your Inventory, then open the Favorites menu during play with Q on keyboard or by holding a direction on a controller’s D-pad. Bethesda says you can assign up to 12 items.
How to add an item to Favorites
- Open Inventory. Press I on keyboard, the Menu button on Xbox, or Options on PlayStation.
- Select the item you want to add or replace.
- Open the Favorites assignment menu. Press B on keyboard, Y on Xbox, or Triangle on PlayStation.
- Choose a Quickslot. Use the left mouse button with a mouse and keyboard, or the D-pad with a controller.
Favorites are the items assigned to the Quickslots menu for access while in-game. Bethesda’s support instructions document a limit of up to 12 assigned items. Bethesda Support: How to add items to my quickslots in Starfield?
How to open and use Favorites during play
Close Inventory first. Press Q on keyboard or hold a direction on the controller D-pad to open Favorites. On keyboard, each assigned slot also has a specific associated key, so you can press that key to select its item. What should you assign?
Bethesda’s controller tips say Equipment, Consumables, and items can be assigned to Quickslots; its inventory tips specifically call out Weapons and Aid items. The menu is flexible, so choose assignments that make sense for what you reach for most often. Bethesda Support: Starfield inventory tips

One possible combat setup, suggested by Xbox Wire, is to use one direction or bar for weapons, another for throwables, and another for Aid, leaving remaining slots for equipment you may want to swap. This is an organizational suggestion, not a requirement. Xbox Wire: Starfield tips for beginners

These are the controls listed in Bethesda’s support instructions; keyboard Quickslots also have individual associated keys. If Favorites will not open
- Confirm that you are using the correct action for the device: press Q on keyboard, or hold rather than briefly tap a D-pad direction on controller.
- If a button behaves differently from the listed control, inspect System > Settings > Bindings for a remapped input.
- When assigning, start by selecting an item in Inventory, then open the Favorites assignment menu and choose a slot.
