Start with a small wheat plot. It is quick to establish, supplies food and seeds, and gives you a renewable way to feed or breed animals later. Add sugar cane when you find it; save iron and hostile-mob farms for when you have the materials and know which design works in your edition and version.
What should your first farm be?
Start with wheat
Collect wheat seeds by breaking short grass, then make a small field beside a pond or river. Till the ground within four blocks of water, plant the seeds and let the crop grow. A torch can keep the field lit at night. This is a manual starter plot, not an automated farm. Minecraft’s beginner survival guidance also recommends making a simple farm.
Grass does not always drop seeds: the Minecraft Wiki’s crop-farming tutorial gives a 1-in-8 chance per grass plant. A mature wheat plant yields one wheat and one to four seeds, according to the same tutorial. It estimates that most crops mature within about 52 minutes, or roughly 2.5 Minecraft days, but treat that as an approximation rather than a guaranteed harvest time; growth depends on conditions and game version. See the crop-farming tutorial.
Use the harvest for more than bread
Wheat can become bread, but its seeds and harvest also help expand your food supply. Use wheat to lure or breed cows, and wheat seeds to lure or breed chickens. Breeding turns surplus crops into renewable animal resources; it is optional, and makes sense once you have animals nearby and enough feed. The survival progression guide and beginner’s guide describe these early survival basics.

Which farm should you add next?
Plant sugar cane when you find it
Sugar cane is useful for progression, not a substitute for your first food crop. It can provide paper for maps, books, bookshelves, cartography tables, enchanting setups and firework rockets; sugar also has uses in recipes such as cake and some potions. Grow it when available and when those goals matter to you, rather than prioritizing it over food. The tips and tricks guide covers its uses.
Expand crops to match your needs
There is no fixed crop list every new world needs. Keep the wheat plot small until you know what you use, then expand or add crops as seeds, water and goals make them worthwhile. A reliable early farm is one you can tend with the resources at hand, not the largest design you can build.

When are iron and mob farms worth building?
Iron farms are optional projects, not a day-one requirement
Some iron-golem farm designs are presented as buildable early, but that does not make them universally easy or dependable across editions and versions. The Minecraft Wiki’s iron-golem farming tutorial notes that spawn-rate and iron-output details are missing. Do not plan around a promised yield; check that a specific design matches your edition and version before investing materials.
Hostile-mob farms need planning
Mob-farm placement and performance depend on spawning rules, and building one in survival can be dangerous. A tall farm may also stop working when you descend underground to mine, because the player’s location affects spawning. These are later projects: verify the design for your version and where you intend to spend time before building. The mob-farm tutorial discusses these constraints.

Choose farms by the job they do
| Farm | Best time to build | What it provides | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small wheat plot | As soon as you have seeds and nearby water | Wheat and more seeds for food and breeding | Manual tending; keep farmland within four blocks of water. |
| Sugar cane | Once you find it and want its crafting materials | Paper and sugar for progression and recipes | Useful for specific goals, but not your first food farm. |
| Animal breeding | After you find animals and can spare feed | Renewable animal resources | Optional; depends on available animals, feed and needs. |
| Iron-golem farm | When you are ready for a more complex build | Iron; output rate not established in the cited tutorial | Design compatibility and mechanics vary; confirm your edition and version. |
| Hostile-mob farm | When you understand spawning and have a suitable location | Hostile-mob drops; specific yields depend on the design | Can be dangerous, and player location can affect whether it operates. |
The practical order is simple: get a small wheat plot working, use its surplus to support food and breeding, add sugar cane when it serves a crafting goal, and postpone automated farms until you can verify a version-compatible design. The available guides do not establish a current version-specific Java-versus-Bedrock comparison, so avoid assuming that a build works identically in both editions.
