A support that can be socketed is not necessarily compatible, and compatibility alone does not guarantee the effect you want.
How to check a support gem before using it
- Identify what the skill does. Check its properties and whether you use it directly, through a totem, as a triggered skill, or as a Persistent Skill. These distinctions matter because some supports are restricted by how a skill is used.
- Read the support’s requirements and full effect. Look for restrictions, conditions, costs, cooldowns, penalties, and the specific change it makes. Ask whether that change helps your intended interaction, rather than relying on the support’s name or a general recommendation.
- Consider the other supports in the setup. Another support can change how the skill behaves, so a combination that appears suitable when considered alone may not produce the expected result. Players have reported that support availability can depend on what is already socketed; treat that as community guidance, not a complete statement of official rules.
- Check tier and availability. A support’s name does not tell you that every tier is interchangeable or available at every stage. Confirm that the tier you plan to use is accessible for your character’s progression.
- Verify the exact setup in game. Confirm the resulting skill and its effect after socketing. If you use a planner, check that it reflects the current patch and treat its output as a planning aid rather than proof of in-game behavior.
There is no universal “best support” list for an unspecified skill: the useful choice depends on the skill, its activation method, your goal, and the version being played.
Rules that affect support compatibility
Supports restricted to skills you use yourself
Grinding Gear Games’ 0.3.0 patch notes state that supports intended for skills “you use yourself” cannot support Persistent Skills and, unless a support specifies otherwise, cannot support skills used by totems or triggered skills. Check the support’s own wording instead of assuming every support applies to every skill.
Attribute requirements
The same notes say that when a character does not meet a support’s attribute requirements, that support is disabled; the skill itself is not disabled. This is a reason to check the support separately from the skill when diagnosing a setup that does not behave as expected.
#1 Best Overall
Multiple copies of a support
Older advice may say that a character can use only one copy of each support type. Grinding Gear Games removed that restriction in 0.3.0: the notes say, “We’ve removed the restriction of having one of each support gem per character. You can use as many copies as you like.” That rule reflects the 0.3.0 patch state; use current notes to check for later changes.
Why support advice can go stale
Support gems have changed across patches, so an older guide may describe a restriction, tier, or effect that no longer applies. For example, Grinding Gear Games’ 0.3.0 notes, published August 20, 2025, describe a support-system overhaul with 11 new supports, multiple tiers for many supports, and 40 Lineage Supports available only in Endgame. Those are patch-content counts, not evidence that a particular support is stronger or better for a build.

The 0.4.0 patch notes, published December 4, 2025, record further changes, including support category and attribute adjustments, disabled supports, tier changes, effect rebalancing, and restrictions affecting Meta skills. Then, on March 3, 2026, Grinding Gear Games’ Mirage announcement described new gems and changes to existing skill and support gems. Its level 20, 20% quality gem data applies to the new and changed entries covered by that announcement, not every gem or quality.
These dated examples establish why version matters; they do not establish that any one is the latest update. Before following a specific recommendation, check the live game version and the support’s current requirements and effect. A patch’s gem changes also do not by themselves prove a performance ranking.

How to compare support options for your skill
When choosing between actual supports, compare the factors that determine whether each one fits your setup. Do not assume the same choice is best for campaign progression and Endgame.
- Compatibility: Does the support allow the skill’s activation method and properties?
- Effect: What does it actually add or change, and does that serve your goal?
- Conditions and trade-offs: Does it impose a cost, cooldown, penalty, or other condition?
- Tier and access: Is the relevant tier available at your current progression stage?
- Objective: Are you choosing for campaign progress, Endgame, or another specific purpose?
- Version: Are the recommendation and gem details for the patch you are playing?
A planner can help organize possible combinations, but community reports are not official confirmation of its accuracy or a guarantee that the socketed setup will deliver the intended effect. Verify the result in game.

What this general guide can—and cannot—recommend
Without a named skill, character setup, progression stage, and objective, there is no substantiated current best-in-slot support list to give. The reliable approach is to match the support’s conditions and effect to the skill, account for the way it is activated and the other supports in the setup, and validate the combination against current game data. The 0.3.0 patch notes describe a goal of increasing build diversity; that is Grinding Gear Games’ stated intent, not an independently measured result.
