Its dream-therapy story gives the puzzles a surreal setting, while reviews suggest the experience is inventive and charming, though some puzzles can turn obtuse. It is a strong fit if you enjoy experimental spatial puzzles more than a consistently smooth difficulty curve.
What is Superliminal?
Superliminal is a first-person puzzle adventure set inside an experimental dream-therapy program. You wake in the dream and try to find your way out, guided by Dr. Glenn Pierce while an AI assistant complicates matters, according to the Steam description. Its surreal rooms and impossible spaces serve a central purpose: they make perception part of the puzzle.
How do the puzzles work?
The game uses forced perspective and optical illusions as mechanics. An object’s apparent size from your chosen viewpoint can affect its size when you pick it up, so a small-looking object may become large if you manipulate it from the right angle. Pillow Castle developer Albert Shih summarized the idea in a 2019 PlayStation Blog post: “In our game, from the correct angle, 2D images can sometimes become real 3D objects.” The post also describes trompe-l’oeil as one of the illusion techniques behind the game. This means progress often comes from changing your viewpoint or reconsidering what an object could be, rather than searching for a conventional key or switch. The store descriptions frame the goal as changing perspective and thinking outside the box to wake from the dream. Epic Games Store and Nintendo UK both describe that premise.

Is Superliminal worth playing?
For players who want a puzzle game with a memorable central mechanic, the available reviews point to a favorable reception. GameSpot rated it 8/10 in a review dated July 15, 2020, calling it a perspective-focused puzzle game that is “equal parts trippy and endearing.” GameSpot’s review supports the case for its blend of unusual puzzles and warmth.
There is a meaningful caveat: the challenge is not uniformly smooth. Epic’s store page displayed an OpenCritic top critic average of 75 and a 65% critics-recommend figure when accessed in 2026.
