Today’s Strands theme is “Marvel-ous and then some.” The spangram is SUPERHEROES; the six other theme words are STORM, WOLVERINE, ROGUE, DAREDEVIL, THING and HULK.
Hints for the August 21 Strands puzzle
If you want to solve the puzzle yourself, use these clues in order and stop when you have enough to continue.
- Theme: “Marvel-ous and then some.”
- Additional clue: Some might say we’re in the Endgame now.
- Opening letters, in grid order: ST, SU, WOL, RO, DA, TH, HU.
For in-game hint progress, the reported helper words are POWER, STORE, RIVER, THINK, ROAD and HIRE. These are words to find to unlock hints, not answers to the theme.

Strands is a word-search-style game played on a six-by-eight letter grid. Find words related to the theme clue; the spangram names the connection among the theme answers and stretches across at least two sides of the board. Its endpoints do not have to land on the board’s edges.
Letters in a word can connect horizontally, vertically or diagonally, and the path can change direction. Finding three valid non-theme words of at least four letters unlocks a hint that highlights one of the theme words. The game is available on the NYT website and in the NYT Games app.
