In the original Subnautica, you can enable and open the command console on PC with the F3 menu, or use controller shortcuts described by official support. Commands can add items, spawn objects, or move you around the map—but save first: Playdigious warns that commands disable achievements and may block the game or corrupt your save.
Before using commands: save and check your edition
These instructions concern the original Subnautica, not Subnautica: Below Zero or Subnautica 2. Button shortcuts and console behavior can vary by platform or version, so check the game edition and the menus shown on your screen if a step does not match.
Playdigious Help Center’s Subnautica support page warns: “Beware, using these commands will disable all achievements and potentially block your game or even corrupt your save file! Make sure to save your game before using them.” Save before entering commands, and avoid using them in a save you cannot risk losing.
How to enable and open the console on PC
The Steam-published Subnautica developer-console guide gives these steps for PC:
#1 Best Overall
- Press F3 to open the menu.
- Press F8 to free the mouse.
- Uncheck Disable Console.
- Press F3 and F8 again to close the menus.
- Open the console with the tilde (~) key. Keyboard layouts vary, so the key may not be in the same place on every keyboard.
After restarting the game, the guide says to open and close the F3 menu once before trying the console. If the console does not appear, check that Disable Console is unchecked and repeat that menu step. The F3 developer menu is for changing the console setting; it is separate from the command line where you enter commands.
How to open the command interface with a controller
Official support describes two controller methods: pause and press LB + RB to reveal development and command buttons, or resume play and press LB + RB + LT + RT simultaneously to trigger the command line. The support page does not identify every platform or controller version covered by these shortcuts. If they do not work, check the game edition and the on-screen pause-menu options for your platform rather than assuming the combination is universal.
Useful commands: add items, spawn objects, and travel
Enter the command followed by its arguments. Square brackets in the syntax below mark information you supply; do not type the brackets themselves.
| What you want to do | Command | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Add an item to inventory | item [item] [number]item titanium 5 |
Adds the specified quantity to inventory; the example adds five titanium. |
| Place an object in the world | spawn [item] [number]spawn seaglide 1 |
Spawns the object in front of the player; the example spawns one Seaglide. |
| Travel to a named biome | biome [name]biome safe |
Teleports to the named biome; safe is the guide’s example for Safe Shallows. |
| Travel to coordinates | warp [x] [y] [z] |
Moves the player to the specified coordinates. |
| List locations | goto |
The Steam guide says entering it without an argument returns a list of locations. |
What to do when an item ID is rejected
Command IDs do not always match the names shown in the game, and names containing spaces may need to be joined together. If a command rejects an item name, look up its spawn ID in an edition-specific reference rather than guessing. The third-party Subnautica Commands reference describes its list as covering PC and Xbox One, but does not identify a version or date; treat it as a lookup aid, not proof that every ID works in every edition.
