Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 is already available for Nintendo Switch, and a free update lets the collection run on Nintendo Switch 2. On Switch 2, Nintendo lists 4K resolution in TV mode and 1080p in handheld and tabletop modes; Nintendo says 4K output is capped at 60 fps and requires a compatible TV and game. The collection launched October 2, 2025, with both games in one physical release or available individually as digital titles.
Does Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 run in 4K on Switch 2?
Yes, in TV mode. Nintendo specifies 4K resolution on Switch 2 when the console is connected to a compatible TV, and its launch-trailer description says 4K output is capped at 60 fps. That is a resolution and frame-rate limit for 4K output—not a promise of 4K at 120 fps. Nintendo lists 1080p for handheld and tabletop modes, so the 4K claim does not apply to play on the console’s built-in screen. See Nintendo’s product page and Nintendo of America’s launch-trailer description for the stated display details.

How can you buy the collection?
Nintendo released the collection on October 2, 2025, for Nintendo Switch. The two games are sold together in a physical collection, and Nintendo also offered each title individually as a digital game. Nintendo’s announcement describes those release options; check its release announcement for the original details.
Do you need amiibo to play?
No. Amiibo are optional: Nintendo documents them as a way to receive helpful in-game items, not as a requirement to access either game. When scanned, the Mario & Luma amiibo grants a Life Mushroom, while the Rosalina & Lumas amiibo grants a 1-Up Mushroom. Nintendo’s amiibo instructions explain how to use the figures.

- A variety of playable characters are available, some with unique attributes that affect gameplay and platforming physics.
- Younger and less-experienced players will love playing as Toadette, who is brand new to both games, and Nabbit, who was formerly only playable in New Super Luigi U. Both characters offer extra assistance during play.
- Multiplayer sessions are even more fun, frantic, and exciting thanks to entertaining character interactions. Need a boost? Try jumping off a teammate’s head or getting a teammate to throw you.
- Features a wealth of help features, like a Hints gallery, reference videos, and a Super Guide in New Super Mario Bros. U that can complete levels for you if they’re giving you trouble.
- Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.
What is established about earlier versions?
The documented differences to focus on are the combined physical collection, the stated Switch 2 resolution modes, and the listed interface, Storybook, Assist Mode, control, music-player, and amiibo features. Nintendo’s cited materials do not provide a full technical comparison with every earlier release, so they do not establish which version is definitively best or support broader claims about graphics quality or comparative frame rates.
