GNN’s May 2024 report uses this name for the ROM hack with a level-creation interface and the features described above.
Super Mario Maker 64 on SM64Games
The SM64Games listing describes Super Mario Maker 64 as a “Super Mario Maker-inspired level creator for Super Mario 64” and lists versions 1.2c and 1.3. The listing does not say when those versions were released or identify which is current, so it cannot confirm a new 2026 release.
The 2017 N64 editor
An archived GameHacking.org forum announcement dated July 19, 2017, describes a controller-operated N64 editor under the names Super Mario Maker 64 and Super Mario 64 Maker. The post says users could select, move, copy and paste objects; adjust properties and dimensions; rotate objects; change themes and music; and enter play mode from the editor. It also describes sharing levels by uploading save states. The announcement says, “Since there is no online mode on N64, submit your levels here!”
How to play the reported ROM hack
- Obtain the project patch and follow its instructions. The GNN report says the game requires patching a Super Mario 64 ROM file, but the sources here do not establish a current download location or provide verified patching steps.
- Choose where to play. The report names an emulator or original Nintendo 64 hardware as options.
- For original hardware, check flashcart compatibility. An SD-card-compatible N64 flashcart is one reported way to run the patched game. Compatibility depends on the specific flashcart and patch; no model was verified. An emulator does not require buying a flashcart.
What is—and is not—confirmed about a new release
The May 2024 GNN article documents Mario Builder 64, while the SM64Games listing and archived 2017 forum announcement document other similarly named entries. None of these sources verifies a new 2026 release, establishes the latest version, or connects all the projects to one another. They also do not confirm a current level-sharing service or provide a reliable side-by-side comparison of features and supported hardware.
