Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa apologized in June 2025 after demand for the Switch 2 exceeded supply in many countries. In Japan, more than 2.2 million applications went into the My Nintendo Store’s purchase drawing—far more than Nintendo expected. That figure was for the Japan drawing, not a count of global preorders or unique buyers.
Why did Nintendo apologize for Switch 2 preorders?
Furukawa said demand for the console was exceeding supply in many countries and apologized for the inconvenience to consumers. In Nintendo’s English-translated summary of its 85th Annual General Meeting Q&A, he said: “Currently, for Nintendo Switch 2, demand is exceeding supply in many countries, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing our consumers.”

He also described the shortage of available purchase opportunities in Japan. Nintendo had received more applications for its official-store drawing than expected, and some applicants remained unselected even after four drawings. Furukawa said the company would continue strengthening production and supply.
What did the 2.2 million figure count?
More than 2.2 million applications were submitted to the randomly selected purchase drawing at Japan’s My Nintendo Store. Furukawa recounted that on April 23, 2025, he announced the figure and apologized because a significant number of applicants would not be selected. The number does not represent worldwide preorder attempts, confirmed orders, or necessarily 2.2 million distinct people. Nintendo’s 85th Annual General Meeting Q&A summary describes the figure in the context of that Japan store drawing.

What happened during the Switch 2 preorder rollout?
- January 16, 2025: Nintendo announced Switch 2 as the successor to Nintendo Switch, with a 2025 release planned. It said the system would play Switch 2 games and physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, while noting that some Switch titles might not be supported or fully compatible. Nintendo’s announcement set out those initial details.
- April 2: Nintendo announced the June 5 launch date and product details. Its announcement listed a Japan-only Japanese-Language System with a suggested retail price of 49,980 yen, including tax. Nintendo’s release announcement identifies that price and regional model.
- Early April: Nintendo began taking applications for randomly selected purchase opportunities through its My Nintendo Store in Japan.
- April 23: Furukawa said he had announced that the Japan drawing had received more than 2.2 million applications and apologized that many applicants would not be selected.
- April 24: In the United States, buyers reported long waits, error messages, empty carts, quick sellouts and some apparent order confirmations followed by cancellation notices as retailers opened preorders. The Associated Press reported that the total preorder capacity at each retailer was unclear. The AP’s contemporaneous account describes those buyer-facing problems.
- June 5: Switch 2 launched.
- June 11: Nintendo said the system had sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide in its first four days after release. This was Nintendo’s own reported sales figure, not an independent estimate. Nintendo’s sales announcement gives the company’s figure and timeframe.
- June shareholder meeting: Furukawa apologized for demand exceeding supply in many countries, noted that four Japan store drawings had taken place, and said Nintendo would work to strengthen production and supply.
Why was it so hard to preorder a Switch 2?
The available reporting points to demand outstripping supply, while US customers also encountered retailer-site and transaction problems during the preorder rush. Those are related parts of the launch story, but the evidence does not establish one cause for every problem. The AP did not have confirmed allocation totals for each retailer, so the number of unsuccessful checkout attempts or the share of buyers affected cannot be calculated from its account. Nor does it establish that bots caused the reported errors.
Nintendo’s official Japanese-store drawing was a separate process from US retailer preorders. Nintendo’s statement that applications exceeded expectations explains why many drawing applicants missed out; the AP’s reporting describes the distinct delays, errors and sellouts faced by US retailer customers. Nintendo’s store also cautioned that launch-day delivery was not guaranteed for its orders.

What happened after launch?
Nintendo reported more than 3.5 million Switch 2 units sold worldwide in the first four days after the June 5, 2025 launch. That company-reported sales figure provides a measure of early demand, but it does not reveal how many people tried and failed to preorder or how much retailer inventory had been available.
The preorder disruptions and apology describe the 2025 launch period. They do not establish present-day stock, prices, or delivery availability.
