Nintendo says some new Nintendo-published games exclusive to Switch 2 will have different suggested prices for physical and digital editions in the U.S. starting in May 2026. That does not mean every physical game will cost more at checkout: retailers set their own prices, and Nintendo says pricing can vary by title.
What Nintendo is changing
Nintendo’s U.S. support page says the different-MSRP policy begins in May 2026, starting with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. It applies to new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 and their physical versions—not automatically to every Switch 2 release.

Nintendo says the two formats offer the same experience, and attributes the different suggested prices to the costs of producing and distributing packaged and digital games. Nintendo Support’s explanation of Switch 2 game pricing describes the change.
Does a physical copy always cost more?
No. MSRP is the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, not a guaranteed checkout price. Nintendo says its retail partners set their own prices and that pricing may vary by title. A retailer’s current price, discounts, availability and edition determine what a buyer actually pays; Nintendo’s policy announcement alone does not establish a universal physical premium.

- The following games are included in the cartridge: STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (3.6 GB)
- STAR WARS Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (1.1 GB)
- STAR WARS Episode I Racer (254 MB)
- STAR WARS Republic Commando (2.5 GB)
- STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed (3.4 GB)
For Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, GamesRadar reported U.S. prices of $59.99 for digital and $69.99 for physical, and a May 21, 2026 release date. Those are reported example prices, not verified live offers from retailers. GamesRadar’s report gives the example, but it should not be treated as a price rule for other games or stores.
How this differs from earlier Switch 2 pricing
The later policy does not mean Nintendo always priced physical Switch 2 games above digital ones. In its 2025 launch notice, Nintendo of America listed the same MSRP for the physical and digital editions of Mario Kart World ($79.99) and Donkey Kong Bananza ($69.99). Those launch prices show that the formats had equal stated MSRPs for those titles at launch; they do not establish prices for later releases. Nintendo of America’s launch announcement lists the figures.

What to check before buying a physical edition
“Physical” does not always mean the full game is stored on the card. Nintendo Switch 2 has game-key cards, which store a key to activate software rather than the complete game data. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said an internet connection is needed for the initial download, and the card must be inserted for subsequent gameplay. Nintendo’s 85th Annual General Meeting Q&A summary explains the format.
