Is the Nintendo Switch 2 Worth $450? A Launch-Era Hands-On Verdict

Nintendo Switch 2’s $449.99 US launch MSRP made the strongest case for players who want Nintendo games in both handheld and TV modes. Its value depends on the games you want, battery needs and total cost.

At its US launch suggested retail price of $449.99, the Nintendo Switch 2 made the strongest case for itself to players who want Nintendo’s games in both handheld and TV modes. Engadget reviewer Sam Rutherford’s April 3, 2025 hands-on assessment was favorable: the larger, sharper screen, upgraded hardware, flexible Joy-Con 2 controllers and compatibility with many original Switch games make it a substantial refinement. The value is less clear if Nintendo’s games do not interest you or long battery life is a priority. The $449.99 figure is Nintendo’s launch MSRP, not a verified current price.

What the $449.99 launch price bought

Nintendo announced a US suggested retail price of $449.99 for the console. Its $499.99 launch bundle added a download code for Mario Kart World. Both figures are launch-announcement prices; they do not establish current retail pricing or availability.

The standard package announced by Nintendo included the console and Joy-Con 2 controllers, a Joy-Con 2 Grip and straps, the dock, an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable, an AC adapter and a USB-C charging cable. The bundle’s game was a download code, rather than a separate physical game card.

What changes in the Switch 2 experience

A larger screen and more capable TV mode

Nintendo lists a 7.9-inch LCD with 1080p resolution. The dock supports output up to 4K and games up to 120 frames per second when both the game and TV support those features. Nintendo also describes faster processing, improved graphics and shorter loading times. These are platform capabilities, not a guarantee that every game will use the highest resolution or frame rate.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Rutherford found the screen bright and colorful and said he did not particularly miss having an OLED panel. That is a reviewer’s hands-on impression, not a claim that an LCD and OLED look identical; some players may still prefer OLED’s display characteristics.

Joy-Con 2 add another control option

The Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically and can work as mouse-style controls in compatible games. Nintendo also describes a freely adjustable rear stand, an additional top USB-C port and GameShare. These features broaden the ways the system can be used, though their usefulness depends on the games and situations a player cares about.

Storage and existing Switch games

The console has 256 GB of internal storage. Nintendo specifies microSD Express cards for expansion; Tom’s Hardware lists support for cards up to 2 TB. Do not assume a regular microSD card is the supported expansion format.

Nintendo Switch 2 System with Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 Bundle
  • The next evolution of the Nintendo Switch system
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
  • Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***

Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, while warning that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. Existing Nintendo Switch Joy-Con and Pro Controllers can connect wirelessly. For owners with a substantial Switch library or compatible controllers, this carry-forward value can make the upgrade easier to justify, but it is not universal backward compatibility.

The trade-offs that matter before buying

Battery life depends on the game and use

Nintendo estimates two to six and a half hours of battery life, varying with software and conditions. Post-launch coverage has identified runtime as a downside, and Nintendo Life reports testing around Nintendo’s estimate. Treat the range as a guide rather than a promise for every game: demanding titles and how the system is used affect how long it lasts.

The screen is LCD, not OLED

The larger 1080p LCD is a clear step in size and resolution, but players who specifically want an OLED panel will not find one here. Rutherford’s positive reaction to the LCD is one perspective; whether the difference matters is a personal display preference.

The console price is not the whole cost

At launch, Nintendo’s bundle cost $499.99 and included a Mario Kart World download code. Engadget also noted that some accessories were more expensive than their previous-generation counterparts. Those launch observations do not establish current accessory prices, so check the total for the console, games and any accessories you actually need before deciding.

Is the Nintendo Switch 2 worth $450?

Rutherford’s favorable verdict makes sense for players who want Nintendo exclusives, value handheld and TV play in one system, and can make use of compatible games or controllers they already own. The larger screen and upgraded hardware strengthen the hybrid format without changing its basic appeal.

It is easier to wait if the announced games do not appeal to you, you mainly want long stretches of portable play between charges, or the full cost of the console and games would crowd out other priorities. TechCrunch’s launch preview likewise suggested that readers who were not drawn to the exclusive lineup could safely wait; that was a launch-era judgment, not an assessment of the current game library.

For the launch bundle versus console-only choice, the practical question is whether Mario Kart World interests you and whether you are comfortable receiving it as a download code. For a buy-now-versus-wait decision, weigh your interest in Nintendo’s games, how much you value the handheld/TV format, your existing Switch library, battery needs and the current total price. Check a retailer for today’s price and stock; the launch MSRP is not a current checkout quote.
