At Gamescom 2024, I expected Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed to be a fairly standard licensed brawler. The demo surprised me: its combat felt responsive and approachable, and its energetic pace and presentation made a stronger impression than I expected. That was my reaction to a limited hands-on slice—not a verdict on the full game or a broader critical consensus.
What made the Gamescom demo stand out
The surprise was not that the demo reinvented the brawler. It was that the fundamentals felt immediately inviting: combat responded well, the action moved at an energetic clip, and the presentation fit the playful tone associated with the Turtles. That combination made the demo more enjoyable than the fairly familiar licensed-game setup had led me to expect.
A convention demo is only a snapshot. It can show how a short stretch of combat feels, but it cannot establish whether the campaign sustains that pace, how its systems develop, or how polished the complete release is. The impression here belongs specifically to the Gamescom 2024 demo.
What Mutants Unleashed is
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed is an Outright Games release developed by AHEARTFULOFGAMES with Paramount Game Studios. The publisher describes it as based on the 2023 film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem in its launch announcement.

The Gamescom demo earned its place as my biggest surprise of the event because it cleared a modest but meaningful bar: it felt fun to play rather than merely recognizable as a Turtles game. If you are deciding whether the preview itself proves the whole game is excellent, it does not. It supports a narrower conclusion: the slice I played had appealing, responsive combat and lively presentation, while the full campaign needs to be judged on its own merits.
