Sword of the Sea is best understood as an adventure built around the pleasure of moving through a striking world. Its Hoversword turns sand and water into a flowing route for surfing, jumps and tricks, while a quest to restore a lost ocean gives the journey its purpose. Reviewers praise the sensation and atmosphere; the trade-off is that puzzles and trick challenges are comparatively light.
What is Sword of the Sea?
Developed and published by Giant Squid, Sword of the Sea follows a quest to restore a lost ocean. You ride an ancient Hoversword through landscapes that include sandy deserts and glacial mountains, with terrain and water shaping how you travel. The game released on August 19, 2025, and the cited platform listings cover PlayStation 5 and PC. PlayStation’s official page and Steam’s listing describe the game and its availability.
What does the Hoversword feel like?
Movement is the main event. Giant Squid and PlayStation describe the Hoversword as drawing on surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding: build momentum, catch air, then add flips, spins and grabs. It is a traversal tool first, carrying you across changing surfaces and encouraging you to follow the landscape’s contours rather than simply hurry from one objective to the next. Giant Squid’s game description lays out that movement focus.
PC Gamer’s reviewer calls the surfing smooth and enjoyable. The same review reports that a DualSense controller’s haptics made different surfaces feel more grounded to that reviewer. That is an optional PS5 controller feature, not a requirement for playing. GamesRadar+ likewise describes the hoverboarding as fluid, connecting its reviewer’s response to the studio’s earlier Journey and The Pathless. These are individual critical impressions, not a guarantee that every player will experience the controls in the same way.

How do the world and music shape the journey?
The scenery gives the movement room to breathe. Wide stretches invite a long, uninterrupted glide, while shifts among sand, water and other terrain keep the ride visually varied. The ocean-restoration quest ties those environments together, so the setting is more than a succession of surfaces to cross.
Atmosphere is a major part of the appeal reported by critics. PC Gamer praises the scenery and soundtrack as well as the mood they create. The official PlayStation page credits Giant Squid creative director Matt Nava and composer Austin Wintory. In the studio’s 2023 announcement, Nava called it “our most ambitious game to date.” The PlayStation Blog announcement carries that statement.

Are the puzzles and tricks deep?
Expect the puzzles to support the journey, not to turn it into a demanding puzzle adventure. PC Gamer describes progression puzzles as not particularly difficult, set alongside open areas for surfing. The review also finds the trick system shallow: there are flips, spins and grabs, but the evidence does not suggest a deep skateboarding-style simulation built around elaborate trick mastery.
Optional timed skate-park challenges provide a more focused test of movement. They suit players who want a reason to refine a route or attempt a cleaner run, but they do not change the overall emphasis on flowing traversal and atmosphere.
