The project’s current site lists version 1.3.10, released October 1, 2026, and offers a Windows installer or source code for building on Linux, FreeBSD and other platforms.
What is TORCS?
TORCS combines racing against computer-controlled opponents with tools for simulation and development. Its uses include casual driving, teaching, research and creating robot drivers; it can also run headlessly for repeatable batch races managed by custom race software. The project describes its current inventory as 114 track maps across road, dirt, oval, experimental and test circuits. TORCS project overview
What is the current TORCS version?
As of October 8, 2026, the official site lists TORCS 1.3.10 as the stable release, dated October 1, 2026. Its release information highlights 73 experimental tracks, two bridge test tracks, a rewritten Robot Tutorial, and graphics and input updates. These are figures and features reported by the project. - Immersive Gaming Experience: Perfect for Xbox and PC gaming titles, the Driving Force simulates the feeling of driving a real car with precision steering and pressure-sensitive pedals
- Premium Control: The Driving Force feedback racing wheel provides a detailed simulation of driving a real car, with helical gearing delivering smooth, quiet steering and a hand-stitched leather cover
- Customizable Pedals: These pressure-sensitive nonlinear brake pedals provide a responsive, accurate braking feel on a sturdy base - with adjustable pedal faces for finer control
- 900-Degree Rotation: Lock-to-lock rotation of the Driving Force means you can turn the wheel around two and a half times, hand over hand on wide turns - just like a real F1 race car
- Up Your Game: Take your racing simulation to the next level with Driving Force accessories like the Driving Force Shifter or desk and rig mounts
Linux, FreeBSD and other source builds
For Linux and FreeBSD, the download page provides source-build guidance. It lists hardware-accelerated OpenGL, FreeGLUT, PLIB, OpenAL, libpng/zlib and ogg/vorbis among the dependencies. Distribution packages may be older or more limited than the project’s own release, so check the package version and contents if you install through a distribution repository.
- Download and unpack the all-in-one source archive.
- From the source directory, run
./configure && make. - Install the program and data with
make installfollowed bymake datainstall.
Those are the commands documented by the project; dependency setup and installation permissions may vary by system. The site lists Linux, FreeBSD and Windows, but the reviewed pages do not confirm a currently supported macOS release. TORCS download page

- MULTI-COMPATIBLE GAMING STEERING WHEEL: PS4, Switch 2, Switch, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC. For setup, follow the connection instructions specific to each console (user manual included). An official controller must be connected for proper operation. Suitable for most racing games: GTA, Gran Turismo, Forza, Dirt, WRC, Farming Simulator, etc. This steering wheel is not compatible with PS5
- DOUBLE JOYSTICK: all the functions of a controller right on the steering wheel. Perfect for playing GTA: you steer and control your character without letting go of the wheel
- IMMERSIVE DRIVING EXPERIENCE: comes with analog pedals (accelerator and brake), 22 cm wheel diameter, 180° rotation angle, and steering wheel paddles for smooth and fast gear shifting. Programmable RGB LEDs around the 2 sticks and programmable buttons to suit all driving styles: 3 sensitivity modes depending on the type of circuit. Vibration motor available
- FINISH AND STABILITY: Robust ABS structure and ergonomic profile for excellent grip and improved comfort during long gaming sessions. For added stability, the wheel features a suction cup mounting system, ensuring perfect adhesion to most surfaces. Sold separately: clamping screws for mounting on cockpit
- WARRANTY & AFTER-SALES SERVICE: The Superdrive steering wheel comes with a 2-year manufacturer's warranty. Online support is available on the Subsonic website to answer your questions. Updates are also available in our FAQ section
Can you use a steering wheel with TORCS?
Yes. The project lists steering wheels alongside keyboards, game pads and joysticks. A wheel is optional rather than a requirement, and the official pages reviewed do not identify a verified model-by-model compatibility list. TORCS also supports racing against AI opponents on road, oval and dirt tracks. TORCS project overview
How do you make an AI driver for TORCS?
Start with the Robot Tutorial for version 1.3.10. It provides Linux and Windows setup instructions and checkpoint examples, then covers steering, speed control, opponents and pit stops. The tutorial also includes optional material on car setups, textures and running multiple robots; use the project’s API documentation alongside it when developing a built-in C++ driver. Built-in drivers and network-controlled competition drivers
The Robot Tutorial concerns C++ robot modules that run as drivers in TORCS. The Simulated Car Racing Championship (SCR) is a separate extension: its server patch enables network control of drivers. SCR networking should not be assumed to be included in an unmodified standard installation. The documentation links to the competition software manual and SCR archive. TORCS documentation
Can you create custom cars and tracks?
Yes. The source tree includes the tools trackgen, accc, nfs2ac and texmapper. The project documentation covers track structure, XML descriptors and raceline generation, with expanded workflows for map generation, elevation and banking. The community page says cars and tracks created with the shipped tools can be shared through the project forums. TORCS documentation TORCS community
