Performance has also been a concern, though the developer says its latest surfaced optimization update, patch v1.30, improves the game across platforms. That is a useful update, not a guarantee of smooth performance on every system.
What kind of RPG is Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon?
Developed by Questline and published by Awaken Realms, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a first-person open-world RPG that reimagines Arthurian legend as a mature dark fantasy. Its story is set 600 years after King Arthur’s fall. The full release arrived on May 23, 2025, following an Early Access launch on March 30, 2023, according to the Steam store listing.

The appeal is in the combination of exploration and role-playing choices: the store description highlights a branching main story, side quests, customizable builds, melee and ranged combat, magic, crafting, and survival challenges tied to the Wyrdness at night. Steam describes 50–70 hours of content across three zones; treat that as the publisher’s estimate, not a guaranteed playtime.
Have the performance issues improved?
Questline’s patch v1.30 announcement reports an optimization pass with stability and performance improvements across platforms and areas. The developer says the largest gains should be on PC, Steam Deck, and Steam Machine, estimating 5–30 additional FPS depending on the setup. For consoles, it estimates around 2 additional FPS alongside better overall stability. These are developer-reported estimates, not independent benchmark results or guaranteed gains for an individual player.

The update also adds FSR to the upscaling options, separates Grass Density from Vegetation Quality, and adjusts grass-density values for GPU-bound setups, high resolutions, and lower-end GPUs. Those changes give PC players more ways to tune image quality and workload, but they do not establish that every scene will run smoothly or that console versions have a stable 60 FPS mode.
On Steam Deck, Questline describes two presets: Quality targets about 30 FPS, while Performance targets about 35–40 FPS. Actual results can still vary with settings, scene, and device. The official PC requirements are likewise targets rather than proof of performance in every area.
For historical context, PC Gamer’s Robert Jones reported that the game’s demo ran at a locked 60 FPS in 4K on an RTX 3090 Ti. If you want a first-person RPG built around dark fantasy exploration, consequential quests, and flexible character builds, Tainted Grail has a clear pitch. The main caution is performance: v1.30 is evidence that optimization work continues, but the developer’s estimates do not replace testing on your platform. On PC, try the demo and adjust settings; on other platforms, weigh the reported improvements as an update rather than a promise of a particular frame rate.

Steam’s English-language user-review snapshot listed the game as Very Positive at 87% from 19,986 reviews, with recent reviews Very Positive at 84% from 503 reviews when accessed in 2026. Those storefront figures change over time and represent user sentiment, not a critic score or a substitute for your own priorities.
Which editions and extras are available?
The Steam listing includes the base game, a free demo, downloadable content, and bundles. The official Tainted Grail website describes an Excalibur Edition that bundles the base game with the Sanctuary of Sarras expansion, official soundtrack, digital artbook, Golden Horse Armor, and other listed bonus content. Steam describes the expansion as adding 10–15 hours of content. Check the live store in your region for current contents and availability, since editions and offers can vary.
