On April 16, 2024, Take-Two Interactive announced a cost-reduction plan that included eliminating several games in development and reducing its workforce by approximately 5%. The company projected the plan would be largely complete by December 31, 2024; its announcement does not confirm the final number of employees affected or identify the cancelled games.

What Take-Two announced

In a Form 8-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on April 16, 2024, Take-Two said its board had approved a cost-reduction program. The company described the plan as a way to “identify efficiencies across its business and enhance the Company’s margin profile, while still investing for growth.” That statement gives Take-Two’s rationale; it is not a quotation attributed to a named executive.

The filing said the company was “rationalizing its pipeline and eliminating several projects in development” while streamlining its organizational structure. It also said the changes would eliminate headcount and reduce future hiring needs. Read Take-Two’s April 16, 2024 SEC filing.

How many employees were affected?

Take-Two projected a workforce reduction of approximately 5%. Its SEC filing did not give an exact employee count. Reuters reported the figure as around 600 employees at the time; that is an approximate contemporary report, not a precise count stated in the filing. Reuters’ April 16, 2024 report.

What costs and savings did Take-Two project?

Take-Two estimated total charges of $160 million to $200 million for the program. Its filing divided those projected costs into three categories:

Category Take-Two’s estimate
Title cancellations Approximately $120 million to $140 million
Employee severance and related costs Approximately $25 million to $35 million
Office-space reductions Approximately $15 million to $25 million
Total charges $160 million to $200 million
Annual cost savings More than $165 million

These are estimates in Take-Two’s 2024 filing, not confirmed final accounting results. The company said the projected annual savings included both reductions to existing expenses and lower expected expense growth; they should not be read as guaranteed realized savings.
