Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game is a Hobbit life sim, not a combat-led Middle-earth adventure. Set in Bywater, it centers on making a home, growing or gathering food, cooking for neighbours, and helping the community become an official village. That makes “the cozy side of Tolkien” a fair description of its focus—but not a guarantee that every part of the finished game feels equally engaging.
What do you do in Tales of the Shire?
You create a Hobbit and settle into everyday life in Bywater. The game’s official descriptions put domestic routines at the center: customize your home, arrange furniture with grid-free placement, tend a garden, fish, forage, trade, and cook. Seasonal crops and weather, clubs, daily activities, and familiar characters add variety to that routine. Wētā Workshop’s game page and the Steam listing describe a life built around these small activities rather than combat or large-scale exploration.
A home-and-food routine
Food connects several of the game’s systems. You gather or grow ingredients, prepare meals, and share them with other Hobbits. The routine gives gardening and foraging a practical purpose: they feed the social side of life in Bywater, rather than serving only as collections of tasks.
Relationships help Bywater grow
Meeting neighbours and building relationships are part of the community progression. The stated goal is to help Bywater flourish and become an official village. Take-Two’s original announcement likewise tied shared meals and relationships to that village-building objective.

Why the “cozy Tolkien” description fits—and where it has limits
The concept trades the urgency of a conventional fantasy quest for familiar Hobbit comforts: home-making, food, neighbours, and gradual community change. Wētā Workshop’s Richard Taylor, the studio’s co-founder, co-CEO, and chief creative officer, described its creative intent as offering fans “a quieter, more peaceful time” in a less explored corner of the universe. That is a statement of intent, not an independent verdict on how consistently the released game achieves it.
The difference matters because “cozy” can mean different things. If it means unhurried routines and an emphasis on cooking and social connection, the premise is a strong match. If it means a deep farming simulation, a steady stream of new activities, or an expansive adventure through Middle-earth, the official feature list alone does not promise those things.

- Set in the peaceful village of Bywater, near Hobbiton, players create and personalize their own Hobbit character, engaging in activities such as cooking, fishing, foraging, gardening, and home decorating. The game features a grid-free decorating system, allowing for creative freedom in designing your Hobbit home. With a focus on relaxation and community building, players can build relationships with fellow Hobbits and contribute to the growth of Bywater. The game is set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, offering a tranquil experience without combat or major conflicts.
What post-launch reviews say about the pace
Reviews of the released game show why the quiet premise may appeal to some players and frustrate others. These are post-launch assessments, not preview impressions, and their judgments belong to the outlets that made them.
| Outlet | What the reviewer found |
|---|---|
| PC Gamer | Christopher Livingston praised cooking and foraging but criticized waits, quest errands, and the limited range of activities. PC Gamer scored the game 67. |
| GamesRadar+ | The reviewer liked the cooking loop and relationship-based upgrades, but found the cycle repetitive and the village less engaging over time. The reviewer reported completing the main quest in 13 hours; that is one playthrough, not a guaranteed completion time. |
| TechRadar | Its Xbox Series S review was more critical of the pace, plot, and execution. It also noted options for text size, camera sensitivity, camera and cooking assistance, and difficulty. |
Taken together, the reviews suggest a useful expectation to set: the cooking and relationship loops may be the draw, while repetition and stretches with little to do are potential drawbacks. That is a reading of these reviewers’ accounts, not a measured result that applies to every player.

Who is likely to enjoy it?
- Consider it if you want to spend time on Hobbit routines, decorating, food, and neighbourly relationships, and you are comfortable with a deliberately gentle pace.
- Look more closely at the reviews if you want frequent new objectives, substantial farming systems, or exploration and questing to drive most of the experience.
This is an expectation-setting guide based on the game’s published features and the cited reviews, not a firsthand preview verdict.
